Resumen
Claude Debussy, one of the greatest French composers, had a profound influence on twentieth-century music. He is
often categorized as the most distinguished impressionist, which was just one of his many marked traits. Debussy was
influenced by the course of history and culture that took place in Paris during the late nineteenth and early twentieth
centuries. The effects of these factors on Debussy's compositions will be discussed in the early part of this paper. Also,
the relationship of Debussy's life and main works to Impressionistic style will be briefly addressed.
Debussy's twenty-four preludes contain rich and varied harmonies and timbres that evoke a mood and atmosphere
unlike Romantic music, for these pieces Debussy applied titles that suggest natural sounds, dance rhythms, and illusion.
He also employed a language of unique color, with distinctive use of melody, rhythm, harmony, and timbre. Thus, for
effective performance of the preludes, various subtle touches and pedaling as well as both comprehensive and
specialized piano techniques are indispensable. In order to understand Debussy's musical ideas for these works, three
different styles of preludes containing Debussy's main Impressionistic characteristics will be discussed. Compositional
analysis and performance practice suggestions will also be given. Also, performance practice issues will address
questions on touches, articulation, pedaling, dynamics, phrasing, fingering, sonority, and texture. Solutions to some of
the performance problems will be suggested.
