STUDENT INSTRUCTION

a) A3 sized poster on Laboratory Safety Rules, aimed at increasing workplace safety and
awareness.
b) An emergency plan on how to react to a spill.

2. This assignment is to be carried out individually and in ENGLISH!


3. Use the attached marking scheme as a guideline for creating the poster and plan
4. The duration of the assignment is 3 weeks
5. Submit:
• A hardcopy before 4pm 29th March 2021
6. You may consult your instructor whenever needed.
7. This assignment is worth 40% of the modular assessment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Students should be able to create a poster that is effective to stay safe when performing a
laboratory work.
2. Students should be able to layout the emergency plan on spillage.

ASSIGNMENT DETAILS

Everyone working in the laboratory is exposed to hazard and expected to behave with due regard to
comfort and safety among us and to the general efficiently of the laboratories. The poster aims to
provide a general safety rules to be followed when conducting a laboratory work and the emergency
plan for everyone to react the spillage.

TASK:
1. Produce a poster on laboratory Safety Rules for Applied Science Laboratory. Choose any one
of the following:
1. General Laboratory Science
2. Medical Laboratory Science
3. Chemistry Laboratory
4. Physics Laboratory

An effective poster should:


o Grab a reader’s attention
o Have its key message clearly seen from at least 1.5metres away
o be quick and easy to read (No wordy paragraphs allowed)
o be organized
o be attractive and contain clear images
o look professional

2. Emergency Plan for Spillage. Choose any one of the following:


1. Thermometer drops on the floor
2. A micro test tube contains 1cm3 of blood drop on the bench
3. 500ml of concentrated sulfuric acid on the floor
4. 1000ml Unknown flammable liquid spill on the floor

The passing mark for this assessment is 50%. Re-sit is necessary if mark is below 50%
