CONTENTES
 1 .what are hydrophobic interactions
 2 . Formation of hydrophobic interactions
 3 . Strength of hydrophobic interactions
 4 . Factors
 5 . Biological importance of hydrophobic interactions
Solutions
 A mixture in which it’s constituents are homogeneous ( uniform compositions)
 Substances that are similar to each other mix well
 . Polar substances mix well with polar substances
 . Non polar substances mix well with non polar substances
 polar substances don’t mix well with nonpolar substances
1.What are hydrophobic interactions

 Hydrophobic means (water hating)

 Hydrophobic interactions describe the relation between water and
hydrophones ( low water- soluble molecules)
 Hydrophones are non polar molecules and usually have a long chain of carbon
that donot interact with water molecules
 example: Mixing of fat and water
 In hydrophobic interactions a non polar molecule associates with another non
polar molecule and gets aggregates in water
 example formation of micelles
2.Formation of hydrophobic interactions
3.Strength of hydrophobic interactions
 Hydrophobic interactions are relatively stronger than other weak
intermolecular forces

 Factors
 1. Temprature : Increase in temperature will also increase in strength of
hydrophobic interactions

 2. No of carbon on the hydrophones : molecules with the greatest number of

carbons will have the strongest hydrophobic interactions
Biological importance of hydrophobic
interactions
 Hydrophobic interactions are important for proper folding of proteins and
leads to decrease in surface area of proteins and inhibit undesirable
interactions with water molecules
 Hydrophobic interaction is the major stabilizing factor in DNA but double helix
of DNA is stabilized by hydrogen bonding
