SET NO:- 1
Q.NO. Questions
An aircraft is flying at an altitude of 13000 m at a Mach number of 0.82. The cross sectional area
of the inlet diffuser before the L.P compressor stage is 0.5 m2. Determine
1. (i) The mass of air entering the compressor per second.
(ii) The speed of the aircraft
(iii) The stagnation pressure and temperature of air at the diffuser entry.
Air (γ=1.4, R = 287.43 J/kg.K) enters a straight axisymmetric duct at 300 K,3.45 bar and 150 m/s
and leaves it at 277 K,2.058 bar and 260 m/s. The area of cross section at entry is 500 cm2.
Assuming adiabatic flow determine
2. (i) stagnation temperature
(ii) maximum velocity
(iii) mass flow rate
(iv) area of cross section at exit
Air (γ=1.4, cp = 1.05 kJ/kg.K) at p1 = 3 x 105 N/m2 and T1 = 500 K flows with a velocity of
200m/s in a 30 cm duct. Calculate:
3. (i) Mass flow rate
(ii) Stagnation temperature
(iii) Mach number
(iv) Stagnation pressure values assuming the flow as compressible and incompressible
4. List out the applications of gas dynamics.

5. Write the steady flow energy equation for an adiabatic flow of air.

6. Explain the meaning of stagnation state with example.

7. Distinguish between static and stagnation pressures.

8. Differentiate between the static and stagnation temperatures.

9. What is the use of Mach number?

10. What is Crocco number?

11. Name the velocities that are used in expressing the fluid velocities in non-dimensional form.

12. Sketch and name the different regions of compressible flow?
