Update Progress Series – Part 2: How to use Activity Steps

In this Lesson I am going to discuss Update Progress in Schedule by Activity Steps,


so let me to talk about the Advantages of ACTIVITY STEPS:

◾ Divided activities into a smaller piece of work

◾ Easier update progress

◾ Good solution for breakdown complex activity

◾ No further logic required for each step update

But by this solution, you can only record your progress based on your steps.

Software Assumption and Setting:

1. On the Project’s Calculations Tab this option must be checked “Activity


percent complete based on activity steps”.

2. Percent complete type = Physical

How to use:

After that you should now, how these steps assigned to the activities. In the Activity
Sheet go to “Activity Details” then please find “Steps” and after that you can create
your steps:

But if you expect to use these steps to another activities, for instance develop steps
for Engineering section activities as per below table:

No Step Name Progress


1 Issue for Comment 60%
2 Received Client Comment 20%
3 Issue for Approve 20%

In this situation, I suggest you to create “Steps Template” in “Enterprise > Activity
Steps Templates” you can create all kind of template based on your Progress
Measurement System. For instance, I created Sample Webinar Template with
above Table on below picture

And now if you go to Step Tab in activity sheet, you can assign these three steps to
each activity in engineering section just by select “Add from Template” bottom.
And if you record the progress by steps, it will be appeared to your progress column
(for example Physical % complete).

Important Note:

When updating activity with steps you MUST first record an ACTUAL START then
go through STEPS

When you change your project setting to Activity Steps, Other activities
remain to Duration and Unit % complete type.

Each step is assigned a Step Weight, which then determines the Step Weight
Percent. You can insert it by using it to STEP Column (below Picture). The total of
all the steps will automatically equal 100%.

schedule, Activity Steps is the best solution in Primavera P6.
