LESSON 2
As a student, how do you see Philippine dances compared among foreign dances? Give an
example of our own dance that you are proud of. Support your answer. (show also a photo of the
dance)

For me Tinikling because when the tikling birds travel through grass stems, run over tree
branches, or avoid bamboo traps established by rice farmers, it imitates their action. Dancers
mimic the tikling bird's famed grace and speed by deftly moving between giant bamboo poles, as
if they were the tikling bird itself. In the Visayan Islands, rice producers often put up bamboo
traps to safeguard their crops, but tikling birds managed to get over their barriers. Locals are said
to have emulated the movement of the birds, which is how this dramatic traditional folk dance
came to be created.
