“King Bloggish would like for you to paint
one of his guest rooms purple,” explained
Toshgi to three painters, Misang, Oskorn, and
Bershag.
“But, how?!” all three painters asked. “Paint
is only white,” added Bershag.
“Because of the great love all in Nog have for
the color purple, King Bloggish would like to
make purple paint available to everyone,”
Toshgi answered, “so that not only our
clothes, but our houses and carts can be
purple as well.”
“A marvelous new idea!” exclaimed Misang.
“I would love to have purple walls in my
house,” said Oskorn. “But how do we make
purple paint?”
O Rei Blóguish gostaria que vocês pintassem
um dos seus quartos de hóspedes de púrpura,”
explicou Toshgui aos três pintores, Misang,
Oskorn, e Bershag.

“Que ideia maravilhosa!” exclamou Misang.
“Eu adoraria ter paredes púrpuras na minha
casa,” disse Oskorn. “Mas como se faz
tinta púrpura?”

“As you know, Lord Tray oversees the
extraction of the purple sap from the trees that is
used to dye our clothes. King Bloggish has
invited him to stay at the castle this weekend to
discuss the need to extract more purple sap so
there is enough to also use it to color the paint
purple,” explained Toshgi. “The king wishes to
have the walls of the room Lord Tray will stay in
painted purple to show him how beautiful it will
be.”
On Thursday morning the three painters met in a
room at the east end of the king’s palace, to paint
the walls purple for the king’s guest, Lord Tray.
“Here’s the white paint,” said Bershag as he set a
heavy pail down in the room.
“And here’s the purple sap.” Oskorn pulled a
large flask from his pocket and began to pour
some of the sap into the white paint.
Soon the paint in the bucket was a brilliant
purple hue. The three painters dipped in their
brushes to begin painting. By the middle of the
afternoon, all of the walls inside the room were
bright purple. The men stood back to admire
their work with satisfaction.

Lorde Tray.
“Aqui está a tinta branca,” disse Bershag colocando
um balde pesado no chão do quarto.
“E aqui está a seiva púrpura.” Oskorn retirou um
grande frasco do bolso e começou a derramar um
pouco de seiva na tinta branca.
Logo, a tinta no balde tinha uma tonalidade púrpura
brilhante. Os três pintores mergulharam seus pincéis
no balde e começaram a pintar. No meio da tarde,
todas as paredes no interior do quarto eram de uma
cor púrpura radiante. Os homens se afastaram para
admirar satisfeitos o seu trabalho.
 “King Bloggish will be so very pleased,”
said Bershag.
“Oh yes,” agreed Oskorn. “These walls
are beautiful.”
“I’ll return tonight after dinner to make
sure it has dried properly,” said Misang.
And the three friends retired to dinner.

“O Rei Blóguish ficará tão satisfeito,”

disse Bershag.
“Ah sim,” concordou Oskorn. “Essas
paredes estão lindas.”
“Voltarei esta noite, depois do jantar,

It was dark when Misang entered the room that
evening and switched on the light.
Misang gasped. The walls were not the bright
purple he remembered. In fact, he could barely
make out a purple tint. It was obvious they had
not added enough purple to the white paint.
Misang hurried to find his painter friends.
“There’s not time to repaint the walls and for it to
dry before Lord Tray arrives tomorrow morning,”
said Misang. “First thing tomorrow we must tell
the king that we failed in painting the walls
purple.”
“King Bloggish will be so very disappointed,”
said Bershag.
“He doesn’t need to know,” said Oskorn. “We
saw the painted walls with the sun casting a bright
purple hue over them as it shone through the
purple curtains. That is what made the walls look
a brighter purple than they were. We can make
sure the curtains are closed, so the sun will shine
through them,” Oskorn suggested. Then King
Bloggish and Lord Tray will see purple walls!”
“But that’s dishonest!” Misang said to his friends.
“It’s wrong to lie!”
Estava escuro quando Misang entrou no quarto aquela
noite e acendeu a luz.
Misang levou um susto. As paredes não eram daquele
púrpura radiante que ele se lembrava. Na verdade, ele
mal podia reconhecer a cor. Era óbvio que não tinham
adicionado púrpura suficiente na tinta branca. Misang
se apressou em encontrar seus amigos pintores.
“Não há tempo para repintar as paredes, nem para elas
secarem antes do Lorde Tray chegar amanhã de
manhã,” disse Misang. “A primeira coisa que devemos
fazer amanhã é contar ao rei que falhamos em pintar
as paredes de púrpura.”
“O Rei Blóguish ficará tão desapontado,” disse
Bershag.
“Ele não precisa saber,” disse Oskorn. “Nós vimos as
paredes pintadas quando o sol brilhava através das
cortinas púrpuras e lançava uma luz púrpura nelas. Foi
isso o que lhes deu uma cor púrpura mais radiante.

curtains,” said Bershag.
“Something will go wrong,” said Misang. “It’s
better to be honest. I’m going to tell the king of
our mistake.”
“NO!!” shouted Oskorn and Bershag.
“I’ll wire the balcony light so it can’t be turned
off,” offered Oskorn.
“Estão vendo,” disse Oskorn depois que o rei e o

That night Lord Tray retired to his
room only to find the balcony light
brightly shining through his
curtains. He flipped the light
switch, but it seemed to have been
broken and the light remained on.
Lord Tray tossed and turned all
night, trying to shield his eye from
the bright light coming through the
curtains. The next morning he
arrived at the breakfast table with a
puffy, red eye.
“You look as if you hardly slept last
night,” said King Bloggish as he
greeted his visitor.
“The balcony light switch seems to
be broken. I’m not accustomed to
sleeping in a room so well lit,”
answered Lord Tray. “However, I
did enjoy the purple walls, which I
gazed at all night long.”
After breakfast King Bloggish
summoned the three painters.
Naquela noite, Lorde Tray se recolheu
em seu quarto e viu a luz da sacada
reluzindo através das cortinas. Tentou
desligar a luz, mas o interruptor
parecia estar quebrado, e a luz
permaneceu acesa.
Lorde Tray ficou se virando e
remexendo a noite inteira, tentando
proteger os olhos da luz radiante que
entrava pelas cortinas. Na manhã
seguinte, chegou à mesa do café com
o olho vermelho e inchado.
“Parece que mal dormiu a noite
passada,” disse o Rei Blóguish ao
saudar seu visitante.
“O interruptor da luz da sacada parece
estar quebrado. Não estou acostumado
a dormir num quarto tão iluminado,”
respondeu Lorde Tray. “Mas desfrutei
das paredes púrpuras que vi a noite
toda.”
Depois do café da manhã, o Rei
Blóguish reuniu os três pintores.
 “You were in Lord Tray’s
room the night before he
arrived. Did you notice the
balcony light would not turn
off? And if so, why didn’t you
have it fixed?” asked King
Bloggish. “Lord Tray said he
was kept awake due to that
light shining into his room.”
Misang stood quietly while his two friends
answered.
Oskorn went first. “We noticed it was broken, but
we couldn’t find an electrician to repair it.”
Bershag continued, “So I tried to repair it, and
thought I had.”
“Yes,” said Oskorn, “We thought it was working.”
King Bloggish turned to Misang. “Misang, you
have remained quiet. Is there something you know
you aren’t telling me?”
Misang could not keep quiet any longer, and went
on to explain the truth about the pale purple paint
to the king, while his friends hung their heads in
shame. Misang, Bershag, and Oskorn apologized
to the king for not having told him the truth
earlier.
“Vocês estavam no quarto do Lorde Tray na noite
anterior à chegada dele. Notaram que a luz da sacada
não desligava? Se notaram, por que não a
consertaram?” Perguntou o Rei Blóguish. “Lorde
Tray disse que ficou acordado por causa da luz em
seu quarto.”
Misang permaneceu quieto enquanto seus dois
amigos responderam.
Oskorn foi o primeiro. “Nós percebemos que o
interruptor estava quebrado, mas não encontramos
um eletricista para consertá-lo.”
Bershag continuou, “Eu então tentei consertá-lo, e
pensei que o tinha consertado.”
“É,” disse Oskorn, “Pensamos que estivesse
funcionando.”
O Rei Blóguish se virou para Misang. “Misang, você
continua quieto. Sabe de algo que não está
me dizendo?”
Misang não podia mais ficar quieto, e
contou a verdade sobre a pálida tinta
púrpura ao rei, enquanto seus amigos
abaixaram a cabeça, envergonhados.
Misang, Bershag, e Oskorn pediram
desculpas ao rei por não terem
contado a verdade antes.
“My dear friends,” said the king, “I’m sad to
discover you have lied in order to cover up a
mistake instead of telling me about the problem.
We’ve always enjoyed honesty between
ourselves, have we not?”
“Yes, your Majesty, always,” replied Misang.
“Absolutely!” added Oskorn.
“We’re so ashamed,” said Bershag. “Please
forgive us. Please tell us if there is anything we
can do to help set things right.”
“For starters,” the king answered, “I want the
three of you to tell Lord Tray the truth about the
paint, and how you broke that light switch in
order to cover up your mistake. Poor Lord Tray
hardly slept a wink all night long.
“And though I know today is your day off, this
afternoon I want you to paint the walls purple in
another room of the castle. Lord Tray can move
there once the paint has dried.”
The three painters headed off to apologize to
Lord Tray, who graciously accepted their
apologies.
“Meus queridos amigos,” disse o rei, “Estou triste
por ter descoberto que vocês mentiram para
encobrir um erro, em vez de me contarem o
problema. Sempre fomos honestos entre nós, não
é mesmo?”
“Sim, sua Majestade, sempre,” respondeu Misang.
“Com certeza!” Acrescentou Oskorn.
“Estamos tão envergonhados,” disse Bershag. “Por
favor, nos perdoe. Por favor, diga-nos se podemos
fazer algo para ajudar a remediar a situação.”
“Para começo de conversa,” respondeu o rei,
“quero que vocês três contem ao Lorde Tray a
verdade a respeito da tinta, e que quebraram o
interruptor da sacada para encobrir seu erro. O
pobre Lorde Tray mal dormiu esta noite.
“E apesar de eu saber que hoje é o seu dia de folga,
esta tarde quero que pintem de púrpura as paredes
em outro quarto do castelo. O Lorde Tray pode se
mudar para lá quando a tinta secar.”
Os três pintores foram se desculpar com Lorde
Tray, que graciosamente aceitou seu pedido
de desculpas.
The three painters mixed a triple dose of
purple sap into the white paint this time,
and made sure the curtains were drawn
open. When they finished painting, the
walls were a beautiful, bright purple,
even with the curtains open.
Lord Tray hired more workers to extract
more purple sap from the trees. With
time the walls inside the Noggians’
houses were many varied shades of
purple.
“Long live King Bloggish,” shouted the
people of Nog, “for he has given us
purple paint!”
“Long live King Bloggish,” exclaimed
Misang to his two friends, “for he has
shown us true mercy!”
“And he reminded us of the importance
of telling the truth,” said Oskorn.
“May we always be known for our
honesty, and never again try to cover up
our mistakes with a lie!” said Bershag.
Desta vez, os três pintores misturaram uma
dose tripla da seiva púrpura na tinta branca, e
se certificaram que as cortinas estavam
abertas. Quando terminaram de pintar, as
paredes eram de uma cor púrpura linda e
radiante, mesmo com as cortinas abertas.
Lorde Tray contratou mais trabalhadores para
extrair mais seiva púrpura das árvores. Com o
tempo, as paredes no interior das casas dos
Noguianos tinham várias nuanças de púrpura.
“Vida longa ao Rei Blóguish,” gritou o povo
de Nog, “pois ele nos deu tinta púrpura!”
“Vida longa ao Rei Blóguish,” exclamou
Misang aos seus dois amigos, “pois ele nos

disse Bershag.

It’s hard to cover up the truth with lie,
as one falsehood often leads to
another. It might seem more difficult
to tell the truth, but you’ll be relieved
and happier once you do.
