What are a rôle playing games ?

Nowadays, the role playing games designates a bunch of activities who do not necessarily have
links between them. Some do have links between them, but the goal and the set-up are considerably
different. So we can find some role playing games in psychology, some role playing games in video
games, some in live action rôle playing game, on a tabletop rôle playing game, etc.

The different types

°The role playing game in psychology : It allows patients to undertake another personality, and
become aware of the possibility of another point of view. The most classic, in a session where
parents and children are present, is to play the situation while reversing the roles. The protagonists
can thus understand what the others may feel. Very effecient, the psychological role playing game
allow people to work out even very tense conflicts. It’s also used by companies to simulate
relationships between collaborators, from commercial to directors, and from the assistant to the
client.

°The role playing game in larp (Live action role playing game)
Playing cops and robbers has always been an enjoyable part of childhood indulgence. Larp
roleplayers keep those games going while adding more means to them: elaborated costumes,
established game rules, an important sense of logistics, etc. The principle doesn’t budge : you
physically become a character and follow a scenario defined by the organisators. LARP is very
popular nowadays, and is mostly done with many participants and over several days. The frame
varies according to the fictional universe : castles and taverns for medieval realms, abandoned
factories for post-apocalyptic fiction, etc. Each player improvises, depending on to the rôle they are
supposed to play, in order to create a sort of play, of which every player is the author.
