PCA-Choosing an Organization Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Identify an organization and situation you want to study over the remainder of the course.
2. Describe the organization and situation.

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Describe your organization.

ABC Children’s Hospital is a family-centered care organization with over 200 beds and
specialized doctors and nurses. This hospital was created through the eyes of a “child”
meaning that it has all the comforts of home and does not feel institutional. Throughout
the hospital, there are waterfalls, trees, and trains that are used to inspire healing. ABC
Children’s Hospital does everything to try to make your family and the patient welcome
as a family.

2) Describe how Describe your role in the organization (it can be internal or external).

I am a nurse at ABC Children’s Hospital who specialized in pediatrics. The nurses must
complete training specialized in children's healthcare. Our roles include administrating
medication and treatments, collaborating with doctors, the first level of communication
with patients, and mediators for patient needs. Our ultimate role as a nurse is to provide
comfort to the patient’s family.

3) Describe the situation. (see the Canvas instructions for details, especially about how
your situation will be analyzed from five different perspectives over the next five
modules)

Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic started, hospitals have been faced with unprecedented

times. ABC Children’s Hospital was faced with a plethora of issues that slowly
degraded the performance of nurses and the work environment was not feeling very
positive and motivated. Work started to escalate quickly when the pandemic started
because there were staff changes. A lot of members started quitting due to the work
conditions and this just worsen the workload. The biggest damage done to the sector I
work in is when the Charge Nurse, Monica, had to quit due to medical reasons. The
Charge Nurse was of immense support to our entire floor. Monica was the leader that
everyone aspired to be or work for.

1
When Monica left the organization another Charge Nurse was brought in from DEF
Hospital called Karen. Karen seemed to be an ambitious leader with great intentions to
support these unprecedented times. This fell really quick. Karen wanted to start
implementing processes that had worked at DEF Hospital without even trying to get to
know any of the nurses. Everyone struggled to get along with her and the few that did
would get favoritism in the shapes of PTO preference, schedules, and sometimes even
bonuses. At this point, a lot of nurses started quitting. Multiple team meetings were held
because of negative feedback shared about her. However, Karen was backed up by upper
management even though more than 70% of nurses did not like her. This number was
discovered through multiple surveys conducted. This degraded the team’s morale and it
became very difficult to work for several months.
