Factors that affect the design of a Plant Distribution

The design of a plant distribution is affected by many factors, which in general terms have been grouped into eight (8)
categories1:

1. Material Factor: That includes design, variety, quantity, operations and necessary sequences (raw materials, in process and finished).
2. Machinery Factor: Equipment for production, tools and their use.
3. Man Factor: The Human Talent employed in production both in supervision, service and of course, directly and indirectly in the
process.
4. Movement factor: both man and materials, transport, handling, inspection.
5. Waiting Factor: Temporary or permanent storage of finished goods, in process or raw materials, delayed for dispatch or processing.
6. Service Factor: Maintenance, inspection, disposal, programming and dispatch.
7. Building Factor: Internal and external characteristics of the constructions.
8. Change Factor: Versatility, flexibility and expansion.

1. MATERIAL Factor
The most important to consider in the distribution of the plant, it is composed
of the following elements1:

/-\\ 2021-03. Didactic support material – Eng. Alexander Aragón Ch. (www.alexanderaragon.co) – Universidad Autónoma de Occidente 564201 - Facility Layout
4. MOVEMENT Factor
Whenever feasible, you will want to move the material:

• Towards its completion: Without setbacks, crosses in the flow.

• On the same element: No transfers to other equipment.
• Smoothly and quickly: No confusion, delays, unnecessary handling or difficult placement.
• According to the shortest distance: Avoiding long journeys.
• With ease: Without repeating movements or supplementary.
• With security: No danger to operators or materials.
• Conveniently: No physical effort
• Economically: without breaking the batch unit or requiring several trips.
• In coordination with production: Preventing production workers from having to spend extra time or additional efforts.
• In coordination with other handlings: Enabling the integration of different teams.

127
/-\\ 2021-03. Didactic support material – Eng. Alexander Aragón Ch. (www.alexanderaragon.co) – Universidad Autónoma de Occidente 564201 - Facility Layout
4. MOVEMENT Factor
The aisles must comply with:

• If possible straight: With few angles and avoiding blind corners (without visibility).
• Clear: No protrusions of machinery, equipment, columns, fire extinguishers or drinking fountains.
• Marked: On the ground, for clarity of its limits.
• Minimum distances: Tables and flow charts to identify their proper location.
• With double side access: Corridors to the walls serve only on one side.
• Main aisles: For first order traffic.
• Straight (90°): This requires less space.
• Economic Length: Neither too short or too long. Well calculated.
• Of appropriate width: Following the recommendations of the case.
• Only one way: When the widths are limited.

/-\\ 2021-03. Didactic support material – Eng. Alexander Aragón Ch. (www.alexanderaragon.co) – Universidad Autónoma de Occidente 564201 - Facility Layout
5. WAIT Factor

• Raw material storage.
• Storage within the process.
• Delays between operations.
• Storage areas for finished products.
• Storage areas for supplies (supplies), returns, packaging, waste, defective, for maintenance.
• Storage areas for inactive or spare tools, machinery and equipment.

6. SERVICE Factor
All those activities, elements and people that serve or support production to
always keep it in productive activity1. Composed by:
What about this Factor in
our campus?
• Relative to staff:
• Access roads, personal use facilities, fire protection, lighting, heating and
ventilation, offices.
• Regarding the material:
• Quality Control, Production, rejections, lost and waste.

• Access and circulation corridors according to the number of people.

• Parking, changing rooms, bathrooms, showers, disinfection rooms, smoking areas.
• Waiting rooms, shift control (clocks).

7. BUILDING Factor
Depending on whether it is a new building, or an existing one, the adjustments
that adapt to the production process or services that it intends to house inside1
What about this Factor in
must be considered. Considers: our campus?

• Special or general purpose building.

• Of a single plant or several.
• Shape
• Basements, mezzanines
• Soils
• Roofs
• Walls and columns
• Lifts, stairs, cargo elevators.
• Access roads.
• Canals or rivers.

138
/-\\ 2021-03. Didactic support material – Eng. Alexander Aragón Ch. (www.alexanderaragon.co) – Universidad Autónoma de Occidente 564201 - Facility Layout
7. BUILDING Factor
Therefore, it will be necessary to consider:

• General purpose buildings are easy to adapt and sell.

• The number of floors responds to the needs of the process, to the volumes and weight of the products.
• The shape of the building is preferred square or rectangular that is easy to expand.
• If have basements it's necessary guarantee height, ventilation, foundations, lighting and waterproofing, free of water
leaks.
• Windows provide lighting but also affect the process by the entry of heat (or cold) and dust.

139
/-\\ 2021-03. Didactic support material – Eng. Alexander Aragón Ch. (www.alexanderaragon.co) – Universidad Autónoma de Occidente 564201 - Facility Layout
7. BUILDING Factor
• The floors must withstand the load of materials, people, machinery and the building itself.
• The roofs must protect the interior of the plant against inclement weather. In some cases, support equipment handling
high materials such as cranes or monorails.
• Steel or reinforced concrete columns are what support the building. However, its configuration can present a huge
restriction in terms of ample usable space.
• The exterior walls are usually of masonry and the interiors of prefabricated panels, if it is viable.
• Location of access docks of cargo vehicles.

8. CHANGE Factor
The operating conditions always change, so the distribution will be affected1.
Considerations in this regard include:
What about this Factor in
our campus?
• Change in design of materials, product, demand, variety.
• Changes in the process (machinery or methods).
• Personnel changes (skills, shifts, supervision).
• Changes in auxiliary activities (services, storage, building itself).
• External changes and limitations due to installation.

• Machinery and movable equipment as the main element of flexibility,

• Easy access service lines.
• Standard equipment (uniforms).
• Future expansion possibilities horizontally and / or vertically.
