Title: Electromagnetism

Hypothesis:

Aim: To test the strength of an electromagnet

Materials/Apparatus: A large iron nail, copper wire, battery, and paper clips
Diagram:

Procedure:
1. Gather all materials
2. Wrap copper wire 15 times around the nail in the same direction leaving 6 cm of
wire at the top and at the bottom.
3. Connect the top and bottom wire with the negative and positive terminals of the
battery.
4. Place electromagnet over the paper clips. Record the amount of clips picked up.
5. Repeat steps 2-4 by wrapping the coils at 35 coils and 45 coils.
6. Record data for each.
Results:

TRIALS # OF COILS/ WRAPS # OF CLIPS PICKED UP

1 15
2 35
3 45

Discussion:
1. Does the number of times you wrap the wire around the nail affect the strength of the nail?
2. Does the thickness or length of the nail affect the strength of the electromagnet?
3. Does the thickness of the wire affect the power of the electromagnet?
