MT 502 Group 04 Case Study - AI-in-Crop-Management
We used AI (ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO CROPS MANAGEMENT) to monitor the status of the land. Here
you'll find suitable water and fertilizer to grow the crop and increase production. We thought of using a soil
detector or sensor to make the crop grow even more. This is a device that can help base the soil requirements
corresponding to the crops and also helps to maintain the growth of the crop. The feature of this device is more
precisely the mixture of water and fertilizer needed by the crop due to the monitoring system using sensors.
AI is commonly used today in agriculture, but in a different aspect.
Introduction
INTRODUCTION
Agriculture is the art and science of cultivating land, planting crops and taking care of animals. Farming is one
of the oldest methods and arguably main human pursuits. It is why people came a long way over the millennia
in how they farm and grow crops using the oldest methods of farming, up to introducing advanced technologies
in use. Advancements from the agricultural revolution to the modern era are a testament to how farmers could
secure to produce foods and crops.
We all know the challenges that the farmers' facing right now. Due to the climatic conditions, change of
weather, shortage of water supply, and impact of global warming that might disrupt food availability has
affected the productivity of the crops and crops quality during harvest season.
According to news.mongabay.com, the Bicol region is a disaster-prone area. Typhoons, volcanic eruptions,
floods and drought ravage vulnerable locations in rural areas where nearly 80% of the population live. The
main livelihoods here are farming and fishing.
Massive flooding damaged farmland and agricultural infrastructures in December 2019 when Typhoon
Kammuri whacked the province. The year before, in December 2018, Tropical Depression Usman wrought the
same level of damage.
INTRODUCTION
Under the ECQ, however, farming activity shouldn’t be impeded. Guidelines allow for the unhampered
flow of essential goods and supplies as well as the movement of essential workers like farmers, who
ensure the nation’s food supply.
The Bicol region is heavily hinged on agriculture. According to a 2012 census, the region has the
largest agricultural land in the country with 765,820 hectares (1,892,382.43 acres), which is managed
by 486,000 farm operators. Bicol’s total land area is 1.8 million hectares (4.4 million acres).
So that’s why our chosen organization near the Bicol area where we can apply the technology that we
mentioned earlier can help solve the problems in their agriculture. The Aquaculture Society of Legazpi City
(ASLC). The ASLC can use AI (ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO CROPS MANAGEMENT) in their
organization to monitor the status of the land and the crops that they have. Here you can find the necessary
water and fertilizer to grow the crop and increase production, recovery and repair of fishpond structures, flood
gates that include soil erosion control damaged by typhoons, flash floods, storm surge; acquisition or
procurement of machines for the organic feed production for the self-sustainability for aquaculture, agriculture
including organic fertilizer development and production; strategic post(s) within Legazpi City and/or Albay
province to consolidate, organize and provide aquatic/ agricultural products for public consumption at the best
and cheapest price directly harvested from members and farmers; and lastly, the members to avail of
government programs supporting aquaculture/ agriculture organizations and cooperatives in the form of
insurance, loans, grants, incentives etc

Decision Making Process
The association or the association has this traditional technology and knowledge in farming even in managing the
association. Here are the areas that the association should improve; how to repair their infrastructure, manage
their production using the AI or IoT technology and the benefits of the members in the organization. To improve
the current situation of the association, they should know more about modern technology and others. Through
webinars and limited face to face demonstrations of the latest, the association will improve their knowledge.
The registered members should also have training like webinars and schedule limited face to face hands-on to
improve members’ knowledge and skills in agriculture and other related technologies.
The Examples of modern technologies that we can propose to them will be discussed below in Chapter 3,

Infrastructure.
The association or the organization has this traditional technology and knowledge in farming like flood control for soil
erosion, production of organic feeds, no existing Agri trading post in the area and the government benefits for the
association.
And the existing system in managing their crops and even members are still in the traditional approach. Meaning there
are a lot of improvements that the association should improve when it comes to this part.

Aquaculture System
The aquaculture system is the process of modern
fishery technique used in aquaculture farming utilizing
aquaponics methods. According to the Bureau of
Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), aquaponics is
a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics that grows
fish and plants in one integrated system.

Monitoring of climate conditions
Probably the most popular smart agriculture gadgets are weather stations, combining various smart farming
sensors.
Located across the field, they collect various data from the environment and send it to the cloud. The provided
measurements can be used to map the climate conditions, choose the appropriate crops, and take the required
measures to improve their capacity (i.e. precision farming).
Thus, you can monitor your crop growth and any anomalies to
effectively prevent any diseases or infestations that can harm your
yield. Arable and Semios can serve as good representations of how
this use case can be applied in real life.
By using IoT sensors, farmers can collect a vast array of metrics on every facet of the field microclimate and
ecosystem: lighting, temperature, soil condition, humidity, CO2 levels, and pest infections. This data enables
farmers to estimate optimal amounts of water, fertilizers, and pesticides that their crops need, reduce expenses,
and raise better and healthier crops.
For example, CropX builds IoT soil sensors that measure soil moisture, temperature, and electric conductivity
enabling farmers to approach each crop’s unique needs individually. Combined with geospatial data, this
technology helps create precise soil maps for each field. Mothive offers similar services, helping farmers reduce
waste, improve yields, and increase farm sustainability.
Technology Areas
Agricultural drones
The modern agricultural drone in connection to crop management and AI is using two types of communication. 1.
Network Communication, 2. GPS Connection, and Radar.
Network Communication - the RC or remote control which is normally used as a device in mapping the site
before the actual spraying. As you walk with the RC, the setting of the access point is simultaneously recorded as
you push the button. After the map is set, the data collected from the RC is now available to send and to be stored
in the cloud-based server employing Network Communication.
Ex.: Sim cards to Telecommunications Network to the Internet to Cloud
GPS Connection - An Agricultural drone is required to have precision spraying when flying most especially when
applying the fertilizer. Using a drone in attitude mode is inefficient, non-cost effective and prone to crashing. On
the other hand, when applying fertilizer using a drone and with the aid of GPS, it does a flight path to follow to
achieve the even spraying, and precise distance from crop to crop for more effective result.
Radar - This is the new technology adapted to drone technology. The radar detects obstacles to avoid the drone
colliding with an object from a 3-5 meter distance. It can also detect the distance between the vegetation and the
drone.

Predictive analytics for smart farming
Precision agriculture and predictive data analytics go hand in hand. While IoT and smart sensor technology are a
goldmine for highly relevant real-time data, the use of data analytics helps farmers make sense of it and come up
with important predictions: crop harvesting time, the risks of diseases and infestations, yield volume, etc. Data
analytics tools help make farming, which is inherently highly dependent on weather conditions, more manageable,
and predictable.
For example, the Crop Performance platform helps farmers access the volume and quality of yields in advance,
as well as their vulnerability to unfavourable weather conditions, such as floods and drought. It also enables
farmers to optimize the supply of water and nutrients for each crop and even select yield traits to improve quality.
Applied in agriculture, solutions like SoilScout enable farmers to save up to 50% irrigation water, reduce the loss
of fertilizers caused by overwatering, and deliver actionable insights regardless of season or weather conditions.

Data management.
Data management.
Digital Communications.
Smart farming applications should be tailored for use in the field. A business owner or farm manager should be
able to access the information on-site or remotely via a smartphone or desktop computer.
Plus, each connected device should be autonomous and have enough wireless range to communicate with the
other devices and send data to the central server.
Technology Areas
Some of the basic IoT security recommendations include monitoring data traffic, using encryption methods to
protect sensitive data, leveraging AI-based security tools to detect traces of suspicious activity in real-time, and
storing data in the blockchain to ensure its integrity. To fully benefit from IoT, farmers will have to get familiar with
the data security concept, set up internal security policies, and adhere to them.
Technology Areas
Training.
Current Status
In the Aquaculture Society of Legazpi City (ASLC), most of its members have basic knowledge of agricultural
technology. Planting, cultivating, and maintenance in farming are the ones they have known for a long time and
must be improved. Train all the members in the association must be implemented for the latest agricultural
technology.
Proposed Resolution
For the association to improve their knowledge in the agricultural aspect, software programming, hardware, digital
connections must be considered in their training for AI in crop management, climate condition monitoring, and the
accuracy of testing in farming.
And to introduce, we'll also promote aquaculture farming at Legazpi City as an additional means to enhance
aquatic food production.
Implementation Plan
Apply the latest available methodologies and technology in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic
Resources (BFAR) and the local Department of Agriculture (DA).
The person or persons who will pilot the drones should have continuous training to enhance their skills and
knowledge in drones.
We need to consider how to operate the drone most especially the function so that’s why we need to have the
latest technology in drones.
