LESSON: FAMILY

DURATION: 40 to 60 minutes
MATERIAL: Magazines, appendix A, B, blackboard, markers.

 Warm up: Show a picture of a family (it can be a famous one or some family related to the cultural context of the
environment). Ask students to identify the names of the family (E.g. Bart, Maggie, Marge). Use a brainstorm so
students can find some other famous families, make them write the name on the board.
 Introduction: Direct the attention to the picture of the family (provided in appendix A). Start labelling the members of
the family: grandfather, grandmother, grandparents, mother, father, parents, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, cousins.
Have students to repeat the vocabulary.
 Practice: Role play. Organize students in teams of at least 6 members, explain the students they need to play a role
of the family (mother, father, brother, sister, etc). In teams, they must mimic a situation so other teams can guess
what role they are playing. Teach students to be creative and be careful with the instructions, they mustn’t speak.
Provide students with a word search of the members of the family (appendix B), explain they need to find the words
and then ask them to practice with a classmate.
 Production: Ask students to draw their family portrait. Use the magazines so they can cut some pictures and create
a family tree. Explain to students they need to include names, age and cities where their relatives are from. At the
end, they can show their family trees to the classroom (consider time constraints).
