What are the comparatives?


Comparative adjectives in English are used to compare characteristics or qualities
between objects, people or animals. You can compare size, color, height, speed ...
Example of a comparative adjective: The red pencil is bigger than the blue pencil.
In this example, a size comparison is established between two pencils. In this
case, bigger is the comparative used.

What are superlatives?


Superlative adjectives in English express a quality to its fullest extent. They are
also known as benchmarks of excellence. When comparing, for example the size,
the superlative is used to talk about the smallest (the smallest) or the biggest (the
biggest), for example, when talking about a set of boxes, you can say: The
smallest box is mine, the other two are for charity (The smallest box is mine, the
other two are for donating.

How are comparatives and superlatives used?


Comparative and superlative adjectives in English are used when making
comparisons between two things or groups of things (comparative) or groups of
more than three things (superlatives), these comparisons are used to establish
differences between characteristics shared by objects. To use both comparatives
and superlatives, English sentences must follow specific structures. The structure
of sentences with comparatives in English is as follows: noun (as subject) + verb +
comparative adjective + than + noun (as object) Brazil is bigger than Spain. (Brazil
is bigger than Spain) Cars move faster than bicycles. (Cars are faster than
bicycles) The word than is a conjunction that means ‘what’ in Spanish and serves
to unite the two parts of the comparison. On the other hand, the structure for
making sentences with superlatives in English is: noun (as subject) + verb + the +
comparative adjective + noun (as object) The blue tower is the largest building in
the city. (The blue building is the largest in the city.) Everest is the highest
mountain in the planet. (Everest is the highest mountain on the planet.)
Irregular comparatives and superlatives in English
These types of adjectives are called that way because they are not regular, that is,
when forming comparatives and adjectives they completely change their form, they
are basically different words. This applies equally to those who have one, two or
more syllables. Here are some of the most common irregular comparatives and

malo / bad – worse – the worst

lejos / far – farther – the farthest (distancia)

lejos / far – further – the furthest (alcance)

bueno / good – better – the best

tarde / late – later – the latest/last

menos / less – lesser – the least

poco / little – less – the least (amount)

muchos / many – more – most

mucho / much – more – most

EXAMPLES OF COMPARATIVES

1. I like the red shirt, but the blue one is prettier than it.
2. Lisa is younger than Elsa, but Sandra is the oldest of the three
sisters.
3. Jane’s hair is not as long as Sarah’s.
4. Carlos cookies taste better than mines.
5. Getting bad grades is worse than not going to the park.

1. She is the smartest person I know.
2. Today is the coldest day I can remenber.
3. He is the oldest man I know.
4. I am the happiest man in the world.
5. She is living in the smallest house in town.
