Jamboree
Information
As you may have heard from your scout, the troop is actively planning a trip this summer to visit the World Jamboree at the
Bechtel Scouting reserve in WV. The goal of this email is to give parents and scouts all the information that we currently have
so that you can make an informed decision soon as to whether or not you or your Scout will be attending. The commitment to
attend will likely have to be made soon, even while many of the details of the trip are still not known.
We understand that it is wrong to ask parents to commit to a trip before we have even completed our planning, so we would
like to explain how and why we are in this situation.
Discussions about this trip began almost a year ago during our February outing. Rather disappointingly, the jamboree
organizers did not release any useful information for visitor passes until just about 2 1/2 weeks ago and they only released the
dates during the jamboree that visitor passes will be available. They also indicated that only 2000 visitor passes will be
available each day. They have not yet told us when and how the visitor passes will be sold or what they will cost, but do
anticipate sellouts for each day.
We will need to know how many people are going so we can buy tickets the day they go on sale. This could happen today, in
two weeks, or in a couple months... we really don’t know. Until we have the tickets the possibility even remains that we don’t
get any at all. Every email and telephone request for more information is answered with “watch the website”. But don’t
worry. If we can’t get tickets, this is still going to be an awesome trip.
Things we do know
1.) This is going to be an awesome trip: The world jamboree in our backyard will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for our
scouts. And that is only one day of our trip. With just a little research, the scouts and leaders have put together a long list of
amazing local attractions and activities that are within range of base camp. The tough part will be deciding, because they are
all great ideas.
2.) Dates: We will leave for WV Saturday morning, 07/27 and return home sometime on Wednesday 7/31. These dates give us
the best opportunity for jamboree tickets, as they are only available for certain days.
3.) Campsite: Once we got the dates, we were able to reserve a great group campsite at Babcock State Park. It is located
about 30 miles from the jamboree and will be used as our base of operations for the entire trip.
Cost
We anticipate that the individual cost for each person to be around $300. Considerations were made for transportation, camp
fees, meals, programming activities, jamboree tickets, and even some spending money.
Some of the unknown variables that will affect the final cost are:
Number of attendants- the more people we have, the cheaper it will be for each. Camp fees and transportation costs are good
examples of these shared costs.
Cost of jamboree tickets- We budgeted $35 each based on the price for the 2017 national jamboree visitor passes. But really
have no idea.
Programming / Excursions - we are budgeting $100 per man. The leaders and the scouts are still researching, but there is ton
of activities that we can choose from ranging from free to $120 and up.
We will be offering some fundraisers in the months before, and at any time, you can make contributions to your scout’s ISA,
just see Mrs. Corlazzoli
A signup sheet went out via Sign Up Genius on 1/27. To avoid surprises later on, we are asking that the parents fill in the
signup sheet. We are not going to put a signup deadline yet. Instead we encourage everyone to decide and sign up as soon
as possible, do not wait. If your name is not on the list the day tickets go on sale, you won’t get one.
