The Newspaper: Definition, Types, and Parts

What is a Newspaper?
A newspaper is a daily or weekly distributed printed paper in the form of a folded
compilation. It contains news, articles of opinion, features, and advertisements that are printed
in low-cost papers (Merriam-Webster, n.d.).

Different Types of Newspaper

There are several types of newspapers created that are classified based on the format,
periodicity, and scope.
According to publication format
Broadsheet
Also known as quality paper, broadsheet is the most common kind of newspaper.
Measures at 11 or 12 inches wide and 20 inches long, broadsheet papers usually utilize six
columns and are employed by serious newspapers, such as The New York Times and The Wall
Street Journal. These newspapers are being referred to as “heavy” due to the serious nature of
their content. A smaller version of the broadsheet is called a compact.
Tabloid
This type of newspaper is generally filled with celebrity-focused content and seldom
features serious news articles that are found in broadsheets. Measures 11 inches wide and 17
inches long, tabloids are image-led, ‘popular’ newspapers that can be subdivided into two
groups: red tops and middle market dailies. The red tops are tabloids that have red mastheads,
the large font title at the top of a newspaper front page containing its title. The content of this
report on politics and international news but focuses more on celebrity gossip and scandal.
Examples are The Sun, Daily Mirror, and Daily Star newspapers in the UK. The middle market
refers to tabloids that target readers of these papers, ranges between the red tops and the
broadsheets. Examples are the Daily Mail and the Daily Express in the UK.
Berliner
Also referred to as Midi, the Berliner is a newspaper with a page dimension of 470mm x
315mm. It is sold folded and is mid-way between a tabloid and a broadsheet that is one of the
most popular newspaper formats across Europe such as The Guardian.
Compact
This type of newspaper has broadsheet-quality content printed in a tabloid format. The
term “compact” was coined by big agencies who wanted to maintain their serious style of
presenting news yet want to size down their page dimensions. They started using this term to
avoid the aura of tabloid journalism.
According to periodicity
Daily
The daily newspaper, as its name indicates, is published every day. Sometimes with the
exception of Sundays, Saturdays, and some national holidays. It covers the most recent and
important news that spread daily.
Weekly
These newspapers are distributed once a week, normally on Saturdays or Sundays. It.
usually contains the news enlarged and complemented with additional information. Works of
investigative journalism and articles of opinion from renowned journalists are also often given
more space in these.
Biweekly, monthly, or semi-annual
These kinds of newspapers are often published by institutional or business publications.
Their content is usually according to the interest of a smaller audience. It usually covers the
achievements and projects of the organization.
According to its scope

These newspapers contain recent and relevant information that caters to the concerns
and interests of their regional and local communities. Its format, design, and distribution points
are inlined to the needs and customs of the locals.
