(V) Data-based Questions (43 marks)
1 (a) The Germans took to the street because they were discontented about
the Treaty of Versailles signed in the Paris Peace Conference. The
photo was taken in 1919 when the Paris Peace Conference was held.
The Germans held a sign written ‘down with violent peace’, showing
their discontent about the treaty.
(b) (i) Clemenceau thought that the US only joined the war for a short
period of time. It did not suffer from high casualties. Therefore the
US did not have a strong demand for compensation as France did.
(ii) I would support his view. Source B shows that France had lost 350
million men in the war. Germany was the one to attack France and
thus should compensate for the loss. From my own knowledge,
France lost in the Franco-Prussian War and ceded Alsace-Lorraine
to Germany. This was a good chance to take them back. Thus I
support Clemenceau to punish Germany harshly. (Suggested
answer only, marks should be awarded to reasonable answers.)
(c) The Nazi Party advocated the abolition of the Treaty of Versailles to
gain support from the Germans. The poster shows that the symbol of
the Nazi party broke the chains of the Treaty of Versailles, so that the
German would not be bound by the treaty anymore.
(d) No. Source A shows that the Germans demonstrated because they did
not satisfied with the Treaty of Versailles. This showed that the Paris
Peace Conference created revengeful feelings of the Germans. Source
B shows that France demanded huge compensation from Germany.
From my own knowledge, this caused economic difficulties of the
Germans and made them support the Nazi Party. Source C shows that
the Nazi Party gained people’s support by abolishing the Treaty of
Versailles. From my own knowledge, Italy was also dissatisfied with
the Paris Peace Conference since it could not gain the territories as
promised by the powers. This led to the rise of Fascism and expansion
of Italy. Therefore, the Paris Peace Conference could not restore peace
in Europe.

2 (a) Gorbachev.
(b) Gorbachev lessened the control over Eastern European countries and
refused to use force to put down demonstrations. East Europeans thus
gained more freedom.
(c) The cartoonist thought that the Soviet Union shrank because

Gorbachev carried out the reform and introduced democracy. The
cartoon shows that the area of the Soviet Union reduced after using the
‘democracy’ washing powder.
(d) Yes. In 1991, many republics within the Soviet Union declared
independence and formed the Commonwealth of Independent States.
This was reflected in the cartoon as the shrinking of the Soviet Union.
(e) Gorbachev’s reform led to the end of the Cold War. Source A shows
that he did not impose tight control over Eastern European countries
and people there could gained freedom, such as the fall of the Berlin
War. Source B shows that the area of Soviet Union reduced. Its
republics became independent and this led to the dissolution of the
Soviet Union. From my own knowledge, Gorbachev improved the
relations with the US, ending the hostility between the two camps.

(VI) Essay-typed Question (15 marks)

The First World War lasted four years and involved many countries. It brought
several changes to the world politics, including the fall of European empires, the rise
of new nation states and the rise of the US and Japan.

Firstly, the First World War led to the fall of European empires. Four powerful
empires in Europe fell, including the Russian Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire,
the German Empire and the Ottoman Empire. The Soviet Union founded in 1917 was
the first communist country in the world and it had great impact on the world politics
later. This showed that the First World War led to the fall of European empires.

Moreover, the First World War led to the rise of new nation states. After the War,
many new nation states were created in Eastern Europe, such as Hungary, Poland,
Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The map of
Europe had to be redrawn. This showed that the First World War led to the rise of
new nation states.

Finally, the First World War led to the rise of the US and Japan. After the War,
Britain and France became weaker, while the US and Japan grew stronger. The US
extended its trade and increased its military power. Japan’s position in Asia and the
Pacific region was also strengthened. This showed that the First World War led to the
rise of the US and Japan.

To conclude, the First World War brought important changes to the world politics.
