Introduction

OPD is :-
• The point of contact between
hospital & community.
• First impression of hospital.
• Shop window of hospital.
DEFINITION
• Out patient department is defined as a section
of the hospital with allotted physical as well as
medical facilities, medical & other staff in
sufficient number, with regularly scheduled
hours, to provide care for patients who are not
registered as inpatients.
Types of OPDs
1) Centralized :-
 Grouped together in the form of OPD
complex
 Consultants from different departments come
to this area for OPD work

2) Decentralized :-
 outpatient care is provided in
respective department of hospital
To provide specialist diagnostic, medical opinion
to outpatients.
To treat patients on ambulatory basis or
domiciliary basis.
Screen patients for hospitalization.
Follow up treatment of discharge patients.
Training and education of medical,
paramedical and nursing staff.

Functions of OPD
Collection, compilation and analysis of medical
records
Provide primary healthcare by means of
health education
immunization
well baby clinic
Voluntary Counseling & Testing
Centre (VCTC) for HIV/AIDS.
