1The big majority of students who do well in the Cambridge Proficiency Examination have learnt to use a

good monolingual dictionary effectively. Such dictionaries provide information, not just about the meanings
for words but about their pronunciation and grammar as well. A student who learns how to use a dictionary
effectively will be able to work independently for much of the time, and will gain considerate insight into
5the workings of the English language. He or she will be able to confirm to the meanings of words in a text

which contextual clues are insufficient, pronounce words accurately by studying the phonological
transcriptions, and use words accurately both when speaking and writing. Make sure you make the room for
at least one good monolingual dictionary on your bookshelf- and then make sure you use it at a regular basis.
SECTION D: READING COMPREHENSION (30 pts)
Question I. Read the text below and think of the word which best fits each space. Use only ONE word in
each space (10pts)
Nowadays, the global (51) ___________ is increasing and fossil fuel supplies are running out, we
must begin to put a greater priority on harnessing (52) energy sources. Fortunately, there are a
number of readily available, renewable resources that are both cost- effective and earth – friendly. Two such
resources are solar power and (53) power.
Solar energy, which reaches the earth through sunlight, is so abundant that it could (54) the needs
of worldwide energy consumption 6,000 times over. And solar energy is easily harnessed through the use of
3
photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight to electricity. In the US alone, more than 100, 000 homes are (55)
____ with solar electric systems in the form of solar (56) _____ or solar roof tiles. And in other parts of the
world, including many developing countries, the use of solar system is growing steadily.
Another alternative energy source, which is abundant in specific geographical areas, is geothermal
power, which creates (57) by tapping heat from below the surface of the earth. Hot water and steam
that are trapped in underground pools are pumped to the surface and used to run a generator, which produces
electricity. Geothermal energy is 50,000 times more abundant than the entire known supply of fossil fuel
(58) ____ and as with solar power, the technology needed to utilize geothermal energy is fairly simple. A
prime example of effective geothermal use in Iceland, a region of high geothermal activity (59) there
are over 80 percent of private homes, are heated by geothermal power.
Solar and geothermal energy are just two of promising renewable alternatives to conventional energy sources.
The time is long overdue to invest in the (60) and use of alternative energy on global scale.
Question II. Read the following passage and then choose the most suitable word or phrase for each
space. (10 pts)

Is the history of the world in urgent need of correction? Some historians, mostly women, argue that
insufficient (61) _______has been paid to a very important group: women. These historians want history

history books, cavemen (63) _______ most of the food for their families through hunting animals. But the
evidence shows that 80% of the diet of prehistoric humans was vegetarian and it was collected by females.
In addition, women’s efforts in fighting in wars or leading revolutions have been ignored. Textbooks
concentrate on men such as Hannibal or Che Guevara and neglect (64) _______ women such as Theroigne
de Mericourt, an opera singer who led the storming of the Bastille in 1789, or Mariya Bochkareva, a
Bolshevik who organized a well-trained and (65) _______successful troop of 2,000 fighting women during
the Russian Revolution in 1917. Women rulers are also forgotten. Between 962 and 1582 there were at least
16 women rulers in countries (66) _______ from Italy to Angola.
Women make up half the human (67)_______ . If there is no (68) _______ to their contribution to
history in the textbooks, then the real story is not being told. However, many male historians (69)
_______that important female figures have been kept (70) _______ the history books.

Question III. Read the passage and choose the best answers to the questions below. (10 pts)
A useful definition of an air pollutant is a compound added directly or indirectly by humans to the
atmosphere in such quantities as to affect animals, vegetation, or material adversely. Air pollution requires
a very flexible definition that permits continuous change. When the first air pollution laws were established
in England in the fourteenth century, air pollutants were limited to compounds that could be seen or smelled
– a far cry from the extensive list of harmful substances known today. As technology has developed and
knowledge of the health aspects of various chemicals has increased, the list of air pollutants has lengthened.
In the future, even water vapor might be considered an air pollutant under certain conditions.
4
Many of the more important are pollutants, such as sulfur dioxides, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides,
are found in nature. As the Earth developed, the concentration of these pollutants was altered by various
chemical reactions; they became components in biogeochemical cycles. These serve as an air purification
scheme by allowing the compounds to move from the air to the water or soil. On a global basis, nature is
output of these compounds dwarfs resulting from human activities. However, human production usually
occurs in a localized area, such as a city.
In this localized region, human output may be dominant and may temporarily overload the natural
purification scheme of the cycles. The result is an increased concentration of noxious chemicals in the air.
The concentrations at which the adverse effects appear will be greater than the concentrations that the
pollutants would have in the absence of human activities. The actual concentrations need not be large for a
substance to be a pollutant; in fact the numerical value tells us little until we know how much of an increase
this represents over the concentration that would occur naturally in the area. For example, sulfur dioxide
has detectable health effects at 0.08 parts per million (ppm), which is about 400 times its natural level.
Carbon monoxide, however, has a natural level of 0.1 ppm and is not usually a pollutant until its level
reaches about 15 ppm.
71. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. The economic impact of air pollution B. What constitutes an air pollutant

C. the definition of air pollution will continue to change.
D. a substance becomes an air pollutant only in cities.
74. The word “altered” is closest in meaning to .
A. eliminated B. caused C. slowed D. changed
75. Natural pollutants can play an important role in controlling air pollution for which of the following
reasons?
A. They function as part of a purification process
B. They occur in greater quantities than other pollutants.
C. They are less harmful to living beings than are other pollutants.
D. They have existed since the Earth developed.
76. According to the passage, which of the following is true about humans generated air pollution in
localized regions?
A. It can be dwarfed by nature’s output of pollutants in the localized region.
B. It can overwhelm the natural system that removes pollutants.
C. It will damage areas outside of the localized regions.
D. It will react harmfully with naturally occurring pollutants.
77. The word “noxious” is closest in meaning to .
A. harmful B, noticeable C. extensive D. weak
78. According to the passage, the numerical value of the concentration level of a substance is only useful if
………………….
A. the other substances in the area are known B. it is in a localized area
C. the naturally occurring level is also known D. it can be calculated quickly

5
79. The word “detectable” is closest in meaning to .
A. beneficial B. special C. measurable D. separable
80. Which of the following is best supported by the passage?
A. To effectively control pollution, local government should regularly revive their air pollution laws.
B. One of the most important steps in preserving natural lands is to better enforce air pollution laws.
C. Scientists should be consulted in order to establish uniform limits for all air pollutants.
