RATIO AND PROPORTION

OBJECTIVES

1. Applying ratio and proportion for smaller scale preparations

2. Determine whether each of the following item is a proportion or not a proportion.
3. To determine the significance of ratio and proportion in the field of pharmacy.

INTRODUCTION

A proportion is simply a statement that two ratios are equal. It can be written in two
ways: as two equal fractions a/b = c/d; or using a colon, a:b = c:d. ... In problems
involving proportions, we can use cross products to test whether two ratios are equal
and form a proportion.
ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Five (5) grams of powder drug (solute) was dissolved in 50mL solution. Use your 50 mL
solution as reference standard to compute the quantity of the powder drug in the small-
scale preparations.
2. In a smaller-scale, compute for the quantity of solute for 3 mL, 5 mL, 10 mL, and 20 mL
for each test tubes using ratio and proportion. Show your solution in the table.

RELATED QUESTIONS TO ANSWER:

1. In the proportion 5/8 = 25/40,

a. The means are 8 and 25_.
b. The extremes are 5 and 40 .
c. The product of the means is 200.
d. The product of the extremes is 200.

2. Determine whether each of the following item is a proportion or not a

proportion. Use cross products to verify your answer. Show your solution.
a. 6/9=2/3 = 54/6 NO
b. 10/5=50/25 =250/250 YES
c. ½=8/16 =16/16 YES
d. 1/8= 4/64 =64/32 NO
e. 5/7=35/42 =210/245 NO

3. Practice Problems:
Direction: Show the solution and box your final answer. Strictly NO ERASURES
and write your answers below each question.

a. Ferrous sulfate syrup contains 0.12 milligrams of Ferrous sulfate in each 240mL.
How many milligrams of ferrous sulfate would be there in 2.5mL delivered by oral
dispenser?

b. A nasal drop contains 50mg of Sodium chloride in each 30mL. How many
milligrams of the drug would be contained in 0.50mL?

c. If 29.57 mL of a syrup contains 10 grains of ascorbic acid, how many grains are
contained in 5mL?

d. Vitamin E (Myra E®) soft gel capsules cost the pharmacist P330.00 for a bottle of
30 capsules. What would be the cost for 20 capsules?
e. A drug has a concentration of 40 g/mL. How many grams of the drug are in 500 mL
of the solution?

4. What is the clinical significance of ratio and proportion in pharmacy setting?
