Contemporary arts

1) In contemporary art, the artist is free to choose his subject matter.

Sometimes, the subject matter is difficult to identify because

INTENTIONAL

The artist intentionally makes the subject matter difficult to understand so that the viewer will
ponder on the message, concept, or idea of the artwork. The artist may have wanted an
interactive connection between his creation and the viewer.
LACK OF CONNECTION

Sometimes the subject matter may be quite simple to understand for others. However, the
artwork may not relatable for some viewers. It may be something they just really don't like or
aren't interested in.
LACK OF KNOWLEDGE

The more a person knows about something the more it is easier to understand the concept of
an artist.
EXTREME IDEAS

Sometimes the concept or idea of a contemporary artist is just too extreme or too complexing to
understand.

2) Why is “process” rather than “sale” important in contemporary art-

making?

Contemporary art is a reflection of the 21st century culture and society. It involves dynamic
combination of materials, methods, concepts, and subjects that goes beyond the boundaries of
tradition art. It lacks uniform organizing principle that it would be difficult to categorize it in any
previous movements like realism, cubism, etc. Contemporary arts could involve cultural
diversity, technological advancement: in changes the cultural landscapes of identities, values, and
beliefs.

More importantly, the audiences are part of contemporary art. They are sort of the finishing
touches. In fact, some contemporary arts are experiential in nature, that the audience could be part
of it. Their personal reflections, experiences, opinions, and interpretations are what makes the art
valuable. The general concept of contemporary art is to let the viewer consider, react, and respond
to the art. Originality is not an issue in contemporary art because the unique participation of every
viewer makes every art original.
Now, we go back to the issue of why process is more important than sale. To begin with, many
contemporary arts are made not for sale but for experience. Consider an installation art or let’s
say band-aids pasted on cracked walls that was once exhibited in Kobe, Japan’s contemporary art
gallery. This was a very strong representation of wounds or pain are often dealt with. Can anyone
buy the band-aids? Can anyone buy the wall with the band-aid?

Most artists do not create contemporary arts to sell it; they create it to see how people will react to
it; that is why the process of making the artwork is much more important than the sale.

3) Originality is not an issue in contemporary art” means

Meaning an artist can get another artist's work and add to it, redesign and interpret it using other
materials.

Literally, it is not a problem. An artist has his/her own ways on doing it.
