GUIDED GENERALIZATION REVIEW

1. Give the volume of the box, in terms of x, in standard form.

SOLUTIONS:

A. Length = 16 - 2x
Width = 12 - 2x
Height = x

Formula: Volume = L • W • H
V = (16-2x) (12-2x) (x)
2
V = (192 - 32x - 24x + 4𝑥 ) x
2
V = (192 - 56x + 4𝑥 ) x
2 3
V = 192x - 56𝑥 + 4𝑥

3 2 3
V = 4𝑥 - 56𝑥 + 192x 𝑖𝑛

Therefore, the volume of the box in terms of x in standard form is

3 2 3
V = 4𝑥 - 56𝑥 + 192x 𝑖𝑛 .

2. What information from the problem did you use to get the answers?

The information from the problem used to get the answers are the measurements
of the cardboard which is 16 in by 12 in and the illustration which shows the lines
where to cut and the dotted lines where to fold.

3. Explain using concepts, rules, or properties, how the problem is solved.

The concepts, rules, or properties used to solve the problem are the volume of
the box/prism and the standard form of polynomial functions.

4. What is the diameter d of a pipe that allows a maximum flow of 30 𝑓𝑡 /min of water
flowing at a velocity of 400 ft/min? Round your answer to the nearest inch?

SOLUTIONS:

Therefore, the diameter d of a pipe is 4 inches.

5. What information from the problem did you use to get the answers?
6. Explain using concepts, rules, or properties, how the problem is solved.

The concepts, rules, or properties used to solve the problem are Rational
Exponents and Solving Square Roots, and Other Radical Equations.

7. What are the dimensions of the sandbox?

SOLUTIONS:

Therefore, the dimensions of the sandbox: height = 1 ft, width = 4 ft, and
the length = 10 ft.
8. What important information from the problem did you use to answer the problem?

The information from the problem used to get the answers is that the width of the
sandbox is 4 times its height. The length of the sandbox which is 8 ft more than 2
3
times its height and the 40𝑓𝑡 of sand available to fill the sandbox.

9. Explain using concepts, rules, or properties, how the problem is solved.

The concepts, rules, or properties used to solve the problem are the volume of
the box/prism, Rational Root Theorem, and Synthetic Division.

ADDITIONAL NOTES (HOW ARE PRINCIPLES/CONCEPTS OF POLYNOMIAL

FUNCTIONS USEFUL IN THE REAL WORLD?)

★ Principles/concepts of polynomial functions facilitate in solving real-world

problems using its standard form, Rational Exponents and Solving Square Roots
and Other Radical Equations, the volume of the box/prism, Rational Root
Theorem, and Synthetic Division.

★ In Problem 1, the formula for the volume of the box was solved using the concept
of the prism and simplified to polynomial function in standard form. In problem 2,
the diameter of a pipe was solved using rational exponents and solving square
root equations. And in problem 3, the dimensions of the sandbox were solved
using the rational root theorem and synthetic division. With the knowledge of
polynomial functions, decisions were made easier.
