1. Purpose:
2. Purpose:
 Construct the basic knowledge of general Mechanics Physics (L.O.1)
 Solve problems in engineering environment by applying both theoretical and
experimental techniques (L.O.2)
 Understand and acquire skills needed to use physical laws governing real process
and to solve them in the engineering environment (L.O.3)
 Develop confidence and fluency in discussing physics in English (L.O.4)
3. Requirement:
 Read carefully each question and answer it
 Write the answers and draw models CLEAN and TIDY
QUESTIONS
Q1. (30 marks) A frog jumps from the ground at a speed of 2.2 m/s and lands 25 cm from its starting
point.
(a) At which angles above the horizontal could it have jumped? Find the maximum height of the frog
in each case.
(b) Find the equation of the trajectory of the frog and draw on a diagram the trajectory of the frog for
each value of angle found in question (a).
(c) Find the minimum speed of the frog after leaving the ground. Draw this velocity vector on the
diagram you had in question (b).
Q2. (10 marks) Sơn and Hà ride two motorbikes from IU at the same time. Sơn travels northwest
(45o north of west) at 48 km/h, and Hà travels at 56 km/h in a direction 40 o west of south.
(a) Draw the velocity vector of Sơn relative to Hà.
(b) After what time will Sơn and Hà be 16 km apart?
Q3. (20 marks) Two blocks A and B of mass mA = 40 kg and mB = 10kg
respectively are placed on a horizontal surface as shown in Fig. 1. There
is no friction between A and the surface. Between A and B, the coefficient
of static friction is 0.60 and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.40. The
Fig. 1
magnitude of the horizontal force F applied on B is 100 N.
(a) Draw the free body diagrams for A and for B.
(b) Find the accelerations of A and B.
Q4. (20 marks) In Fig. 2, a small block of mass m is placed on the inner wall of a
hollow thin cylinder of radius R = 20.0 cm, which rotates from rest about a vertical
axis with acceleration of 2.20 rad/s2. After 5.50 s, the block begins to stay on the
wall at a constant height.
(a) Find the coefficient of static friction between the block and the wall of the
cylinder. Fig. 2
(b) How many revolutions has the cylinder turned after this interval of 5.50 s?
Q5. (20 marks) There are 2 blocks M1 and M2 of mass m1 = 4.0 kg and m2 = 2.0 kg respectively,
attached to each other by a light string. M 1 is hung to the ceiling of an elevator by a light string. Find
the tension in each string if the elevator goes up
(a) with a constant speed of 2.5 m/s,
(b) with a constant acceleration of 2.2 m/s2.
(c) If the maximum tension the strings can withstand is 92 N, what is the maximum acceleration of the
elevator so that a string does not break?
