M Porting
Donnie and Donna Miller started M Porting two (2) years ago when they both finished college.
Donna is an avid amateur photographer who was not satisfied with the functionality and durability
of existing photographic equipment storage canister or the metal that holds the roll of camera film.
Her husband, Donnie, develop a new cannister as a project in his Senior Product Design class.
Donna, a marketing major, was so impressed she decided that after graduation they would start
their own company manufacturing canister for cameras and other bulky equipment. Thus, M
Porting was created.

With the help of a small business loan, Donna and Donnie acquired a 2,400 square foot space in the
local industrial park and filled it with used manufacturing equipment. Donnie refined the design to
improve manufacturability and Donna got the local camera stores to sell their canister. However,
the current facility layout that they have acquired is organized for product development rather than
for production.

Answer the following questions: (3 items x 10 points)

1. What are the facility options available for M Porting?
ANSWER:
The facility options available to the company shall be withered in order to move to a new
manufacturing facility or to upgrade the existing facility. While relocation could be expensive in
the short term, it could have potential benefits, such as tax cuts and enhanced operations,
discovering new environments (culture), among others. On the other hand, the key advantage of
restructuring compare to relocation is that it is less expensive. It has to do with redesigning the
plant in such a way that the new layout fits the needs of the company that the previous one
could not have done. In order to make a better decision, M porting should consider making a
detailed cost-benefit analysis for all businesses to compare the cost-effectiveness of the cost-
effectiveness and the advantages of the cost-effectiveness, both in the short and long term.
2. What are the considerations that must be considered by M Porting if it decides to re-
design its refurbished facility?
