This week the BBC News website is interviewing
people with unusual jobs. In this issue we speak to
an animal psychologist.
Dr Mugford works with animals, especially pets.
He is the director of the Animal Behaviour
Centre in Chertsey, Surrey. The centre specialises
in conduct and personality problems in pets, but
he often has to visit zoos and farms and work

At the beginning, he had to work very hard because
he didn’t have much help. Soon, people started
sending their animals to the centre with excellent
results. “When I see a sad, angry, violent or
unfriendly dog, I don’t see a problem. I see an
opportunity to help.
There are all types of animals in the centre, and I
want to see my patients’ reaction when they see
other animals. I take my patients for a walk around
the centre twice a day. Some dogs are friendly, some
are ‘talkative’ and others are completely shy or lazy –
they don’t want to do anything!”

not the cheapest of all in England, but it’s definitely

1968, and I became a doctor in Zoology and
Psychology at the same university three years later. I
am a veterinarian AND a psychologist.”

The Maracana was one of the world’s largest
stadiums. Originally, it had a capacity for
200,000 spectators, but after some big changes
in 1998, it has now a capacity for 70,000 seated
people.
The first football match in this stadium was a
long time ago, on June 16 1950. A lot of people

against Uruguay, and they lost! But they have
won five world cups.
