1) Consider an actual regenerative rankine cycle with open feed water heater.
For each kg of steam entering turbine, if m kg of steam with specific enthalpy
of ‘ h1’is bled from turbine, and specific enthalpy of liquid water entering the
heater is‘h2’, then ‘h3’ specific enthalpy of saturated liquid leaving heater

2) The values of enthalpies of steam at inlet and outlet of turbine in a Rankine

ANSWER ANY FIVE OF THE FOLLOWING (5*12=60M)

1) (i) Explain about open and closed gas turbine power plants and discuss its
advantages and disadvantages?(5M)
(ii) Air is drawn in a gas turbine unit at a temperature of 15C , 1.01 bar
and pressure ratio of 7:1.The compressor is driven by H.P turbine and L.P
turbine drives a separate power shaft. The isentropic efficiencies of
compressor, H.P and L.P turbines are 0.82,0.85 and 0.85 respectively.If
the maximum cycle temperature is 610C.calculate

(i) The pressure and temperature of gases entering the gas turbine
(ii) The net power developed per unit kg/s masssflow
(iii) The work ratio (iv) The thermal efficiency of unit. Neglect mass
of fuel and assume specific heat of air 1.005 kJ/kg K.ratio of
specific heat for air is 1.4.
For combustin and expansion processes, specific heat of gases is
1.15 kJ/kg K and ratio of specific heat is 1.333(7M)

2) Discuss about mean temperature of heat addition? Write about open feed water

(ii) In a single heater regenerative cycle, the steam enters the turbine at 30
bar, 400C and the exhaust pressure is 0.1 bar. The feed water heater is a
direct contact type which operates at 5 bar.Find

(i) The efficiency and steam rate of cycle.The increase in mean


temperature of heat addition, efficiency with regeneration?
Neglect pump work.

Properties from Steam table: At 30 bar:h=3230.9 kJ/kg, s=6.921 kJ/kgK

At 0.1 bar: sf(saturated liquid entropy)=0.649 kJ/kg K ,sfg(sat.vapour


entropy-sat.liquid entropropy. hfg(saturated vapour enthalpy-sat. Liquid
enthalpy)=2392.8 kJ/kg Locate the extracted steam region in TS plot. Will it in
super heated or wet region?

If it is in super heated region: temperature at 5 bar is 172C, h(enthalpy)=2796


kJ/kg.

If it is in wet region:At 5 bar: sf( sat. liquid entropy)=1.8604 kJ/kg K,


sg(saturated vapour entropy)=6.8192 kJ/kg K. hf(saturated liquid enthalpy) =640.1
kJ/kg.saturated temperature at 5 bar is 151.8C. hg(saturated vapour
enthalpy)=2757.5 kJ/kg

3) Why shock waves will not develop in subsonic region? Derive the expression
for critical mass flow rate through nozzle(2+5=7M)
(ii)In a steam nozzle,steam expands from 16 bar to 5 bar with initial
temperature of 300C and mass flow of 1 kg/s. Determine pressure at throat
,areas of throat and exit considering (i) expansion tobe frictionless
nozzle. Assume velocity at inlet of nozzle is neglected and index of
expansion(n)=1.3.

Properties:At 16 bar, 300C: h (enthalpy)=3034.8 kJ/kg,s(entropy)=6.8844


kJ/kg K,v(specific volume)=0.15862 m3/kg.

Take at throat pressure: h(enthalpy)=2891.39 kJ/kg,v(specific


volume)=0.2559 m3/kg. At 5 bar: h(enthalpy)=2777kJ/kg,v(specific
volume)=0.3882m3/kg

(ii)A multi stage steam turbine has steam entering at 20 bar,300C and leaving
at 0.05 bar and 0.95 dry. Determine reheat factor, condition of steam at exit
from each of five stages considering efficiency ratio of 0.555 and all stages
doing equal work.

Properties at 20 bar,300C:h(enthalpy)=3023.5 kJ/kg, s(entropy)=6.674 kJ/kgK

Properties at 0.05 bar: hf(sat.liquid enthalpy)=137.82kJ/kg, hfg(sat.vapour


enthalpy-sat.liquid enthalpy)=2423.7kJ/kg.(6M)

7) How does cooling tower operates? Discuss the types of cooling towers with

1) A binary vapour power cycle operates on mercury and steam. Standard


mercury vapour at 4.5 bar is supplied to mercury turbine, from which it
exhausts to 0.04 bar. The mercury condenser generates saturated steam at 15
bar which is expanded in a steam turbine to 0.04bar.(12M)

(i) Determine the overall efficiency of cycle

(ii) If 4800 kg/hr of steam flows through the steam turbine, what is
flow through mercury turbine?

(iii) What is the useful workdone in binary vapour power cycle for the
specified steam flow(All processes are reversible)

(iv) If the steam leaving the mercury condenser is superheated to a


temperature of 300C in a super heater located in mercury boiler.If
internal efficiencies of mercury turbine and steam turbine are 0.84
and 0.88 respectively. The properties of standard mercury are

(ii) A closed ideal gas turbine plant operates between temperature limits of
800C and 30C and produces a power of 100kW.The plant is designed such
that there is no need for a regenerator. A fuel of calorific value 45000 kJ/kg
is used. Calculate the mass flow rate of air through the plant and rate of fuel
consumption. Assume cp(specific heat)=1 kJ/kg K, ratio of specific heat=1.4

4) (i) What is stagnation property? Deduce the general relationship relating area,
velocity, pressure etc,, of a compressible fluid expanding isentropically
through nozzle. (1+4=5M)
(ii) What is super saturated flow? What are the effects of supersaturation?
Discuss the phenomina of chocking?(1+2+4=7M)

5) What are the requirements of a condenser? What are the limitations of surface

stage)impulse turbine and draw velocity diagrams for it?(6M)
(ii) In a single stage impulse turbine the isentropic enthalpy drop of 200
kJ/kg occurs in nozzle having efficiency of 96% and nozzle angle of 15.The
blade velocity coefficient is 0.96 and ratio of blade speed to steam ratio is
0.5.The massfow rate is 20 kg/s and velocity of steam entering is 50m/s.
Determine

(a) The blade angles at inlet and outlet if the steam enters blades smoothly
and leaves axially.
(b) The blade efficiency
(c) The power developed in kW. Solve by using velocity diagram (6M)
