Lesson Idea Name: Padlet – Plant Structure

Grade Level/Content Area: third grade/science

Content Standard Addressed: LS1.A Structure and Function

Plants and animals have both internal and external structures that serve various functions in
survival.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
Empowered Learner 1.1.a able to do by the end of this lesson:

Students articulate and set personal learning - Identify different parts of a plant
goals, develop strategies leveraging technology - Describe the importance of each part
to achieve them and reflect on the learning
process itself to improve learning outcomes.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?

The student learning goal for this lesson is to be able to identify the parts of a plant and determine
the importance of each part.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☐ Creating

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

X Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by
teacher direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☐ Student-led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems

and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

Using Padlet, the students will first add a response to – What do plants need to survive? As a class,
we will discuss how plants need sunlight, water, air, etc. in order to survive, allowing the students to
activate prior knowledge. Next, the students will watch a short video clip describing the different

parts of a plant and their functions. They will then write a short summary of each part of a plant
(roots, stem, leaves, flowers, seeds) and explain why each part is important. Afterward, the students
will draw the parts of a plant and label each part. The students will use IXL to practice (Identify plant
parts and their functions) and complete a crossword puzzle. To assess the student’s learning, they
will watch a video that reviews the content they learned which consists of multiple-choice/open-
ended questions within the video (EdPuzzle). Lastly, the students will reflect on their learning by
using the audio or screen recorder on Padlet to talk about one thing they learned from the lesson.

Managing student learning:

Padlet will cause a shift in the behavior of students where they move from passive to active social
learners as they are collaborating with their peers and completing interactive activities. I could use
random selection generators to choose a few students to share their responses aloud.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson supports multiple means of action/expression, an important component of the UDL
framework, by implementing multiple ways that students can demonstrate their knowledge.

Reflective Practice:
I believe Padlet will help students build understanding in a way they could not do with traditional
tools as it allows students to collaborate with one another while using interactive technology tools. I
look forward to implementing EdPuzzle in this lesson because it allows you to make interactive video
lessons that can incorporate multiple-choice or open-ended questions throughout the video to
assess student learning.
