I – SUBJECT: ENGINE OIL CIRCUIT DIAGNOSTICS HELP

This Technical Note describes the procedure for fault-finding on the DXi 5 and 7 engine lubrication
circuits.

CUSTOMER EFFECT:

– Oil pressure warning light illuminated.

Ensure the system is clean while the work is carried out.

Systematically block all openings exposed during disassembly.
Examine the FMIs for each fault, before working on the circuit, to ensure that the problem is
not of electrical origin (Short Circuit or Open Circuit).

III – PRELIMINARY CHECKS
Note on form F0004 the results of the following checks (attach them to the Warranty
Claim if necessary):

– Identify the conditions in which the faults appear (in "comments").

– Check the mileage and the number of hours worked since the last maintenance operation (in
"comments").
– Check the oil level.
– Check the condition of the filter. Change it if necessary.
– Check that there are no leaks in the vicinity of the lubrication circuit.
– Check that the engine oil has not been diluted by diesel (increased oil level, oil smells of diesel,
etc.).
– Check the electrical connection of the pressure sensor and the engine earth.
Repair the harness and/or the connectors if necessary.
– Question the customer on the use of additives in the fuel and on the type of fuel used (biodiesel,
etc) (in "comments").
– Carry out a complete inspection of the circuit following the method in § V if no anomaly is
detected after all these checks.

IV – FAULT IDENTIFICATION
– Connect the diagnostic tool.
– Open a new Jobcard.
– Update the EMS, for vehicles up to CAM 30AC (30/01/2012).
– Carry out a road test, recording the VCADS test "value of sensors".

If the oil pressure alert light comes on during this road test:
– Read off the fault codes and the associated fixed values.
– Note the conditions in which the incident appeared according to the driver.

- The yellow light illuminates if the pressure is lower by 50kPa compared to the nominal curve,
for at least 80% of the time in the last 5 seconds.
- The red light illuminates if the pressure is lower by 75kPa compared to the nominal curve, for
at least 80% of the time in the last 5 seconds.
- A deviation of 10°C around the reference temperature (90°C) causes a pressure deviation of
20kPa (0.2 bar).

– Test the sensor values with the engine hot and the vehicle stationary.
– Start the engine and increase to speed by 700 to 2500 rpm in steps of 200 rpm using the "Cruise"
control to control the engine.
– Superimpose the curve obtained over the reference curve(nominal oil pressure at 90°C - stabilised
speed):

Red light

V – CHECKING THE LUBRICATION CIRCUIT

– Connect pressure gauge 5000261246 on the

oil circuit:

 On the location of plug (1), use

connection 5000267114.
This assembly is to be preferred on 1
DXi 5.

or

 By installing a Tee 5005430267 in the

location of the EMS pressure sensor (2),
to check the reading given by it,
depending on accessibility.

The method with the Tee at mark (2) is to be

preferred if the engine is fitted with a RASEC
pump (only on DXi 7), because sensor installation
is not possible at the mark (1).

2
– Compare the readings obtained via the pressure
gauge with those given by the previous VCADS
test.

V – 1. Different readings between sensor and test

– Change the sensor and repeat the test.

V – 2. Readings identical and/or below those on the reference curve
If the readings are identical and/or below those on the
reference curve:
– Remove the cylinder head cover.
3
– Check the torque settings on the rocker arm
assembly.
– Ensure that the positioning pin is fitted to the
1st bearing on the rocker arm:
• With pin (3)  OK.

• Without pin (4)  Not OK, add the pin.

4

– Remove the filter head to check:

• The pressure regulation valve (5).
• The cooler valve (6).
• The non-return valve (7).

– Take an oil sample and have it analysed. Attach the
form to the Techline file.

– Remove the two high pressure diesel pumps and

check the condition of the push rods, rollers and
drive cams on the camshaft.

– Drain the engine (if no anomaly is noted).

– Check for any metallic particles in the oil (by filtration).

– Check for water or fuel.

V – 2.1 No metallic particles in the oil

– Replace the oil pump.

V – 2.2 Metallic particles in the oil

– Remove the oil sump, being careful not to distort it
(silicone seal). 8
– Attempt to identify the origin of the particles found
(material, shape, etc.)
– Check the torque of the crankshaft bearing screws.
– Check the oil uptake strainer and its assembly onto
the oil pump.
– Remove the oil pump and inspect all rotating
components.
– Check camshaft bushing no.1 on the timing side
(example of a damaged bushing (8)).
– Check the rocker arm drive cams.
– Check the turbocharger (axial and radial shaft
clearance, traces of friction between wheels and
casings, presence of oil).

– Continue the diagnostics with Techline (or your

usual technical support) and attach to the file:
 a complete report of the failures observed and
inspections carried out including the last
Jobcard (in HTML format).
 an oil analysis report and the completed form
F0004.
