COMPARING THE DIFFERENT ERGONOMIC

DESIGN OF FACEMASKS

Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction:

We now have a new way of surviving on a daily basis. Because of the pandemic,

we have adopted a different way of life from what we were used to. Since the start of the pan-

demic, the public has been given new protocols and guidelines to follow in order to prevent

the transmission of the virus COVID19, such as keeping one meter apart in public, washing

your hands, sanitizing the items you use, and wearing a facemask. Since the beginning of the

pandemic, wearing a facemask has been extremely essential in order to avoid being infected

by the virus when going out.

To protect people from the virus, many different types and designs of facemasks have

been manufactured and sold to the public. These facemasks are available in a variety of

designs, including those with air filters, carbon filters, the capacity to control how quickly air

flows through it, the ability to be washed up to 30 times without losing its protective

properties, and more. People wear many sorts of facemasks without realizing its

effectiveness; they simply wear it according to their taste. So, as researchers, we'd like to

know if the design of the facemask is actually as beneficial as they claim.

As we all know, some facemasks are produced and sold purely for the benefit of the

person who sells it and the designer, with no regard for whether or not they are truly useful

and effective. Many people use this mask since it is important to us, so we should test it to

determine whether it helps. Since we, the researchers, wear facemasks, we are eager to learn

about the efficacy of different ergonomic designs of facemasks by examining if it truly blocks

impurities and dust particles from the many environments that the wearer visits and if these

designs are true to their descriptions.

Background of the Study

The numerous ergonomic facemask designs are investigated in this paper. The

asymmetrical dome on the face mask facilitates the handgrip necessary for chin lift

and may be preferable for one-handed ventilation. In addition, you can see what type

of facemask is recommended for us to use to be safe in this study.

A mask is particularly effective at preventing infectious droplets and

particles from spreading to others. Wearing a mask can also help prevent germs

from entering your nose and mouth via other people's respiratory droplets. Masks

should be used as part of a complete plan of action to prevent COVID-19

transmission and save lives; wearing a mask alone will not provide enough

protection against COVID-19.

Face masks have some of the most efficient ways to stop the disease from

spreading. Face-covering helps to prevent the infection from spreading by trapping

viral particles in respiratory droplets. To prevent the transmission of disease, hospital

and medical facility employees wear face masks.

Statement of the Problem

This research aims to study and compare the different designs of

facemasks that were commonly used during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is

to determine the most suitable and most preferable style to use. Generally, it

seeks to answer the following questions:

1. How do the facemasks, which will be used for the experiment,

be described in terms of?

 Comfortability

 Filter efficiency

 Durability

 Fitness

2. How strongly do the following impurities attach to the different

kinds of facemasks?

 Dust

 Sand

 Dirty Mist

3. What is the probability of different impurities passing through

the masks?

4. Which among the facemasks possesses the most suitable er-

gonomic design for protection against impurities?

KN95, N95, and N94 were the most effective facemasks in the market.

This study will examine the effectiveness of these face masks on their different

ergonomic designs. Also, we will determine the capability to protect individuals from

dust. Researchers will draw grid lines before the face masks will be exposed to dust

and will count the number of lines that have dirt.

Researchers will evaluate and analyze the data needed through

experimenting with which these ergonomic designs of three various facemasks. The

model will be exposed in places wherein there will be dust. Also, the model will do

some movements as normal people would do.

In this study, the researchers aim to know which ergonomic design of the

facemask will be much more efficient and effective to use. Also, researchers want to

recognize how to different ergonomic designs of face mask filter impurities of sur-

roundings.

Limitation of the Study

Significance of the Study

The result of this research will identify if the ergonomic design of face masks

does affect its effectiveness in preventing inhalation of several diseases,

which will benefit the following:

Doctors, Nurses, Medical staff. This specific line of work is exposed to a variety of

diseases which requires them an all-around use of face mask which makes them an

important beneficiary. The results of the study will provide proper information if the

face masks that have a specific design for comfort that these people use protect

them from diseases around them. Data gathered will help doctors, nurses, and all

medical staff to choose the right design of face masks to maximize the protection

they get from them.

Public workers. The results of this research will also provide information to those

workers who are always exposed to a crown of people. The study will give Public

workers an idea of what design of face masks will give them comfort and at the same

time proper protection when used. Results will also provide information about the

presentability of the chosen face mask to use which considers because these

workers are always dealing with a crowd, thus needing them to be presentable at all

times.

Normal residents who always go outdoors.

This study will also give enlightenment to residents who go out not caring about the

face masks they wear. This research will give them an idea that comfort doesn't

mean it gives you 100% protection from diseases in terms of face masks. The data

gathered will highlight a specific face mask with a proper ergonomic design and ef-

fectiveness against diseases which will then be recommended to the people.
