Problem

A water is to be softened for an industrial water supply. The Ca+2 content is 107 mg/ℓ, and the
Mg+2 content is 18 mg/ℓ. The allowable breakthrough, , is 5% 0, where 0 is the hardness of
the untreated water. A pilot column 4 in. in diameter and containing 3 ft of resin has been
operated at a flowrate of 0.59 gal/hr to obtain breakthrough data. The following throughput
volumes in gallons at the respective 0 values (where is the effluent hardness) were
obtained: 620, 0.03; 768, 0.07; 820, 0.16; 860, 0.24; 895, 0.36; 922, 0.47; 940, 0.52; 980, 0.66;
1008, 0.74; 1066, 0.87; and 1220, 0.99. The resin has a specific weight of 44 lb/ft3, and the
design flowrate is 150,000 gal/day. Using the scale-up design approach, determine:

a. The exchange column volume and pounds of resin.

b. The rate at which the resins are expended per hour.

c. The design column life in hours and days.

d. The diameter and height if the resin height is about twice the diameter and diameters are in 6
in. increments up to a maximum of 12 ft.
