Bibliographic citation: Wdowiak, A., Skrzypek, M., Stec, M., & Panasiuk, L. (2019).
Effect of ionizing radiation on the male reproductive system. Annals of Agricultural and
Environmental Medicine, 26(2).

A. Before reading the article, what are your thoughts about the topic? Do you have
any misconceptions?

To effectively cause any disruptions on spermatogenesis as well as problems on

the male reproductive system, the level or dose applied of a certain Ionization
radiation. In order for a human or animal to have a pathologic reaction from
radiation, the dose of radiation from exposure must be at a higher level.

B. What did you learn after reading the article?

 The mature human spermatozoa practically do not have the capability to

repair their own DNA. Several scientific reports concern the effect of
radiation in the workplace related with radioactivity on the quality of
semen. Experiments related with exposure of sperm to radioactivity
showed that sperm DNA damage depends on the radiation dose applied
and experiments related with exposure of sperm to radioactivity showed
that sperm DNA damage depends on the radiation dose applied.
 Irradiation of the male gonads with the dose of 3.5–6 Sv may lead to
permanent infertility and increased risk of the occurrence of congenital
anomalies in the offspring.
 The effect of radioactivity on spermatogenesis has been best investigated
on animal models with the use of rodents. The consequences of irradiation
in rodents are both macroscopic changes (dose-related decrease in the
mass of the nuclei on days 16 and 45 after exposure to the dose of 4–1
Gy), and microscopic changes (decrease in cells of the tubules in the
testes, and the reduction in the number of spermatozoa occurring on day
45 after exposure to 0.25 Gy.

C. What are you still unsure of? What areas sparked your curiosity?

Clearly, this article is a clear indication of the harmful effects of radiation to

human and animals alike. It is obvious that such things like X-Ray machines
causes pathological effects on sperms and spermatogenesis but why do some
people who operates this kind of radiation-emitting machines just simply do not
put up some protection for themselves against the known side effects of
exposure to this kind of radiation machines? Maybe the hospitals and staffs who
are responsible in operating this radiation machine must have safety suits at
least in order for them to have protection against the radiation.

D. How do you plan to utilize the knowledge you gained?

This knowledge that I have gained upon reading the article would be very useful
in my journey in studying Reproductive Physiology and Endocrinology. It will also
be a big help in formulating the future thesis title. And what I’ve gained will surely
be of a great addition to my knowledge that will surely be tested by future
problems and tests that will surely come in our way as we carry on our journey in
the field of veterinary medicine.

E. Overall, what did you feel after reading this article?

Overall, I felt confident and felt good that I have gained some knowledge. I felt
satisfied and it felt so good to have more knowledge on the scale or extent of
damage to the body of being exposed to radiation. This article inspired me to
read furthermore about the effects of radiation to other parts of the body. It would
be very interesting to read more about this topic.
