CURRENT FIELDS/ CAREER OF

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

Engr. Homer o. principe, pee

1
DESIGN ENGINEER

• A career as a design engineer is all about transforming ideas into real

products.
It offers the chance to combine creativity with engineering expertise.
• Design engineers study, research and develop ideas for new products
and the systems used to make them.
• They also modify existing products or processes to increase efficiency or
improve performance.
• Design engineers are not only concerned with making projects that look
good and are easy and safe to use: they are also concerned with
ensuring that the product can be made cost-effectively, efficiently and
satisfactory to the client..
TESTING AND COMMISSIONING ENGINEER

• Commissions and oversees the installation of systems, plant and/or

equipment at a client’s site.
• Commissioning engineers are engaged in the testing of facilities,
equipment and plants to make sure they function correctly and produce
the expected results.
• Co-ordinating testing and commissioning activities and providing advice
on testing and commissioning procedures and documentation.
• Monitoring progress, recording all test results, witnessing final testing
and acceptance of equipment and compilation of all documentation for
inclusion in the site test dossier.
• Ensuring the safe testing and commissioning of completed installations
to achieve the necessary plant performance in accordance with project
programmed requirements.
3
SALES ENGINEER
• Prepare and deliver technical presentations that explain products or
services to customers and prospective customers
• Confer with customers and engineers to assess equipment needs and to
determine system requirements
• Collaborate with sales teams to understand customer requirements and
provide sales support
• Secure and renew orders and arrange delivery
• Plan and modify products to meet customer needs
• Help clients solve problems with installed equipment
• Recommend improved materials or machinery to customers, showing how
changes will lower costs or increase production
• work with research and development (R&D) departments to help identify
and develop new products.
• Sales engineers specialize in technologically and scientifically advanced
products. They use their technical skills to explain the benefits of their
products or services to potential customers and to show how their
products or services are better than their competitors' products.
4
PLANT ENGINEER

• Plant engineers have a variety of responsibilities in industry, all of which

are dedicated to greater efficiency, lower cost and higher profitability for a
manufacturing facility.
• Their work affects the equipment, the workers, product standards and
specifications. Although plant engineers are often degreed industrial or
manufacturing engineers, experience in manufacturing, quality, safety and
management is essential.
• A plant engineer estimates the production cost for products the facility
makes. He also evaluates and implements cost-saving methods.
• He keeps management aware of the estimated costs of changes in product
design so management can review these costs and take appropriate
action.
• He applies the principles of statistical analysis to determine the feasibility
of production processes and to determine staff needs. He reviews existing
production schedules and prioritizes projects based on resources, current
5
methods and company requirements.
TRANSMISSION & DISTRIBUTION ENGINEERS

• Build electrical power distribution systems in overhead and underground

facilities.
• Design cable routes and develop physical layouts including height,
spacing and location parameters.
• Engaged in the testing of facilities and equipment to make sure they
function correctly and produce the expected results.
• Determine electrical equipment needs and quantities for development of
new power systems.
• Manage voltage drop, short circuit, power factor, and sag and stress in a
timely manner.
• Provide engineering support to operations and maintenances of power
distribution systems.
• Monitor performances of electrical systems and recommend
improvements.
• Analyze system failures and suggest appropriate resolutions.
• Work in compliance with company policies and procedures. 6
MAINTENANCE ENGINEER

• Drawing up a schedule for regular maintenance.

• Maintaining the machinery
• Diagnosing problems when machinery breaks down and deciding the best
way to repair them.
• Making repairs. This may include electrical repairs and rewiring, and
minor carpentry work.
• Obtaining any specialized components or fixtures needed to make
repairs.
• Complying with health and safety regulations.
• Maintaining and managing stocks of supplies, parts and equipment.
• Establishing maintenance procedures and policies.
• Keeping records of maintenance and repair costs, incidents and
procedures.
• Managing the maintenance budget.
• Following all safety standards.
• If you're the senior engineer, supervising the other engineers on staff. 7
• Inspect the other engineers' work.
ENGINEERING PROFESSOR

• Delivers the course utilizing the approved course packages ensuring

defined learning objectives are attained.
• Develops and/or improves course packages, in areas of expertise.
• Provide academic consultations and counseling to students
• Conducts relevant research works in his/her field of expertise that will
support the scholarship of discovery in the Academy
• Performs the function of assessors in accordance to the established
procedure
• Participates to community extension activities initiated by the Academy
• Escalates major issues and concerns to Immediate Superior for
appropriate action
• Develop practical simulator, hands-on or laboratory exercises

8
SEAMAN

• Design and oversee testing, installation, and repair of marine apparatus

and equipment.
• Conduct analytical, environmental, operational, or performance studies in
order to develop designs for products, such as marine engines,
equipment, and structures.
• Evaluate operation of marine equipment during acceptance testing and
shakedown cruises.
• Investigate and observe tests on machinery and equipment for
compliance with standards.
• Conduct environmental, operational, or performance tests on marine
machinery and equipment.
• Maintain contact with, and formulate reports for, contractors and clients
in order to ensure completion of work at minimum cost.
