This is how it happened.

Most of the Iyengar Bakeries you see are owned

by Iyengars, who are from Hassan and
surrounding villages. During the 1950-1960s,
there was a drought and their farming activities
were affected severely. So they were forced to
move to Bengaluru, for their livelihood. Few of
them started bakeries for their livelihood. Some of
them were in such a bad state, they'd to sleep on
gunny bags. At that time only a few Iyengars had
moved to Bengaluru, and these people could not
find places to stay also.

They put in their hard work and the bakery

business flourished. Initially just very few Iyengar
bakeries were there, like VB Bakery, Iyengar
Bakery in Jayanagar 3rd Block(now closed) etc.
After the business started flourishing, more and
more people from the villages came and setup
bakeries here. And they named it after their
community.

Some bakeries carry the name LJ Iyengar Bakery,

LJ stand for Lakshmi Janardana, the deity (Kula
Deva) for these people. It's a temple in Bylahalli,
Hassan and during the Annual Cart festival of the
temple(January), all these people meet.

Nowadays, not all Iyengar Bakeries are owned by

Iyengars. Some are just named Iyengar Bakery,
while some are bakeries setup by owners of
Iyengar bakeries, for their labourers, who have
been working for many years. Over the years,
Iyengar Bakery has become a symbol of Quality,
for bakery items. I guess until recently, VB Bakery
was the highest earning bakery in Bengaluru,
followed by the Iyengar Bakery in Austin Town.

Iyengar Bakeries do sell cakes with egg, and

without. Some add rum while making Plum Cake,
some don't. But one thing is assured, All their
products are fresh, prepared every afternoon.
You will not find anything older. That's why people
still throng to these places.

Edit : Krishna RM has mentioned how one of the

first bakeries came up, and hence my answer may
be taken as a continuation to his.

More than a century ago one Mr.H S

Thirumalachar from Iyengar community started
the first ever Iyengar bakery : B.B. Bakery way
back in 1898. He first opened a sweet shop on
Chikpet Main Road, Bangalore, with his brother.
An Englishman from the iconic West End Hotel
was a regular at that sweet shop. He taught
Mr.Achar how to bake bread during the 1890s and
that's how his family got into the baking business.
Since Mr.Achar and his brother started it, the
name of the new venture was B.B. Bakery --

I have no data to prove, however by safely

assuming I can tell you:

Few years or decades back, Iyengar(s) were really

good at what they were doing, at preparing
bakery products.

Every city or town had a bakery run by THE

Iyengar's, now the name is used even by others
just so that they can attract few additional
customers and do well in their business.

The name or title Iyengar's isn't registered by any

single entity, allowing people to use it to their will.

People want to piggyback on the winning horse,

they see using the name Iyengar's is a great
opportunity and they utilize it.

I think they catered to the demand of eggless

bakery products in the market. Now, eggless
items are offered by all kinds of bakeries, but my
guess is that it was not the case when these guys
started.

Iyengars is a vaishnavite sect from Tamil Nadu,

and some of them settled in southern parts of
Karnataka centuries ago. A particular branch of
iyengars in Hassan region started venturing into
bakery business and found great success, adding
more people from the region to spread far and
wide opening the bakeries called as iyengar
bakeries. These bakeries are known for their good
quality, superior and unique taste and use mostly
