EXPERIMENT#8

(I) OBJECTIVE:
To design and verify operation of
(a) Half-wave rectifier
(b) Full-wave center tap rectifier
(c) Bridge rectifier
(II) EXPERIMENTAL CIRCUIT
A. Half wave rectifier
B. Bridge full wave rectifier

C. Centre Tapped full wave rectifier

(III) ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSIONS
A. Half wave rectifier
• The above circuit shows Half-Wave Rectifier having A.C. voltage
source VI, resistance R and diode D1.
• As voltage is applied, in case of positive half cycle, diode will act as
short circuit as the current will flow through the circuit.
• This current when passed through the resistance will give a
potential difference which is our output voltage and hence give
negative half cycle.
• In case of negative half cycle, diode will act as open circuit and no
current will flow through the circuit and hence no potential
difference across the resistance and hence output is 0.
B. Bridge full wave rectifier
• The above circuit shows Half-Wave Rectifier having A.C. voltage
source VS, resistance R and diode D1, D2, D3 and D4.
• As voltage is applied, in case of positive half cycle, D1 and D2 are
short circuited and the other are open circuited. This will allow
current come in downward direction.
• This current will give positive output voltage cycle.
• In case of negative half cycle, D3 and D4 are short circuited and the
others are open circuited. This will also allow current come in
downward direction.
• This current will also give positive output voltage cycle

C. Centre Tapped full wave rectifier

The above circuit shows Half-Wave Rectifier having A.C. voltage
sources V1 and V2, resistance R and diode D1 and D2.
• As voltage is applied, D1 will act as short circuited and other as
open circuited.
• As voltage is applied, D2 will act as short circuited and other as
open circuited.
• The current in both the cases will flow in same direction and the
output voltage will come out to be positive in both the half cycles.
(IV) OBSERVATIONS AND RESULTS
A. Half wave rectifier
The output wave is identical to input wave in the positive half cycle
as diode is in “ON” state and zero in the negative cycle as diode is in
“OFF” state.
B. Bridge full wave rectifier
The output is identical to input wave in the positive half cycle as
diodes D1 and D2 is in “ON” state and reverse of input wave in the
negative half cycle as diodes D3 and D4 is in “ON” state
(V) OUTCOME AND UNDERSTANDING
A. Half wave rectifier
The input sinusoidal AC gets converted into half positive sine wave
at input.
B. Bridge full wave rectifier
The input sinusoidal AC gets converted into a full positive wave
