PUBLIC TRANSPORT EXPANSION IN URBAN PERIPHERIES:
INTRODUCTION:
• Mohali, officially known as Ajitgarh, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, is a planned city in the Mohali district in
Punjab, India, which is a commercial hub lying south-west of Chandigarh.
• It was officially named after Sahibzada Ajit Singh, the eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh.
• Mohali and Chandigarh are contiguous, with only the boundary between Punjab and Chandigarh dividing this
area.
• The plan of Mohali township is an extension of the road and an 800m x 1200m extension of the sector design
system of Chandigarh.

(Ph-6) is not being utilized & remains incomplete
in construction. While the other one (Ph-8) is only
just a bus stop that is being utilized by the buses.

The Bus stops majorly lie along the Mohali Pind
road which tuns through the “Phases” or the
market streets.
Other such stops are just the intersections where
traffic lights are present.

COMMUTER PREFERENCES FOR BUS SERVICE IMPROVEMENT AREAS (2020):
• As per the CMP, the mode share of
buses is around 11% and of shared
autos is 6%.
• The existing bus structure is more
oriented towards regional and
suburban commuters, providing
connectivity between major nodes
like bus terminals, PGI hospital and
university area in the city.
• The commuter preference from the
field study showed frequent
services and safety as two
important attributes across all
mode users.
• In addition, bus users indicated
affordable
• fares as another important service
attribute.
• In comparison, private mode users
were majorly concerned about
travel time by buses.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT EXPANSION IN URBAN PERIPHERIES:
BUS FLEET:

• Out of the 453 buses, 13290


buses were running as city bus
service which is serving Tri-City
Area in
• 2013-14. There are some
suburban bus services to the
nearby areas like Zirakpur,
Kharar, etc.
• There were about 20 buses
being operated per one lakh
population of the tri-city (14.25
lakhs).
• Average age of the bus is
observed to be around 6.65
years which is close to the
scrapping age as per the
scrapping policy of CTU.
