CEN 664 Transportation planning: Spring 2021-2022

ASSIGNMENT

Topic:- Summary of Household Survey for 10 households in

Manikpur area
From the survey we conclude the following points:-

 Most families have an annual income of more than 15 lakhs, and average family
income is more than 12 lakhs.
 All most all the family have 1 4-wheeler (diesel)while most of the them also have 2-
wheelers.
 The head of every household is an employee of Coal India Limited (SECL). And
those who have children going to school generally prefer DAV Korba school
because the school is not far from their home also as almost every kid whose father
works in SECL studies there they prefer DAV Korba.
 Almost all the employees of SECL lives in Manikpur colony and hence their office
and coal mines is just 1-2km away from their home. So time spent in travelling
from home to office or vice versa is less than 5 min.
 Most of the employees prefer general shift i.e, 9AM -4PM working hours. And
some employees keep changing their working hours like for 1 week they will work
from 12AM- 8AM while in next week 9AM-4PM, and in next week 4PM-12AM, so
they keep rotating their working hours.
 All the employees who are managers travel by car/jeep which is provided by
SECL, while others use their own private vehicle.
 The children of every household goes to school by bus at 7:30AM and reach their
school by 8AM and again after school they reach their home my 2:30PM-3:00PM
depending upon the traffic, the bus is provided by government and hence for those
children whose head of the family works in SECL don’t have to pay any charge for
that service.
 People use their 4-wheeler for personal reasons like going for shopping, picnics etc.
The market is 30min far from their colony and they mostly go there once a week.
 The employees are satisfied and happy with the service provided by the SECL for
their daily travel also their daily travel cost is almost 0.
 Some people who visit market more frequently than others complain that at some
road intersections the road is not properly maintained also sometimes they have to
wait for longer period at intersections due to railway crossing which is a major
reason for the traffic jam which occurs sometimes. At these intersections only we
can see majority of the accidents happening in the city because many people who
use 2-wheelers don’t want to wait for the railway crossing to open when the train is
passing and they somehow pass them even though they know that there is high risk
involved in such cases.
 Overall the people of manikpur colony are satisfied with the transport
infrastructure of the city ,they feel safe while travelling at any time.
