For the Facilitator:

Welcome to Grade 7 Level Self-Learning Module on Raising Sensible, Challenging


Thought-Provoking Questions in Public Forums (Seminar/Symposium).

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

EXPECTATIONS

This is your self-instructional learner module in English 7. All the activities


provided in this lesson will help you learn and understand: Raising sensible,
challenging, thought-provoking questions in public forums
(seminar/symposium).
Specifically, you will learn about the following:
1. Differentiate seminar and symposium.
2. Identify the types of thought-provoking questions.
3. Raise sensible, challenging, thought-provoking questions in public
forums.

PRETEST

Read the selection below then answer the questions that follow. Encircle the
correct answer.
Sampaguita De Dios attended the seminar on how to make “Akapulko and
Guava Herbal Soap”. Here are the details on how to make herbal soap made of
akapulko and guava. Before the speaker started,he asked the participants to
write five questions.
Utensils:
plastic pail knife
wooden ladle chopping board
glass or cup cooking pot
mortar and pestle stove
cheese cloth or strainer plastic moulders

How to Prepare a Decoction:


1. Wash the leaves thoroughly and chop or cut in small pieces.
2. Measure 1 glass of chopped fresh leaves and 2 glasses of water.
3. Let it boil for 15 minutes (start timing when the water starts to boil).
4. After 15 minutes, remove from fire and strain in a cheesecloth.
Set aside and let it cool.
Materials:
1 glass Caustic Soda (NaOH)
3 glasses of akapulko or guava decoction,cooled
5 glasses of cooking oil
coloring powder (optional)
Procedure:
1. Prepare the materials and the utensils needed.
2. Measure 1 glass of caustic soda and 3 glasses of akapulko or guava
decoction and pour into a plastic pail.

3. Mix well by stirring continuously using a wooden ladle or bamboo stick.
Use only one direction in mixing the mixture. Stir until the caustic soda is
dissolved.
4. Pour five glasses cooking oil into the mixture.
5. Continue stirring until a consistency of a condensed milk is achieved.
6. Pour the soap mixture into desired plastic molders. Set aside and let it cool
to harden.
7. After 4-5 hours, remove the soap from the molder.
8. Allow 30 days of ageing before packing. Label the finish products.

Elias Ma. Sigasig has a ten-hectare farm with abaca plants. Yearly, he is
helping many farmers in Bicol. Aside from farmers, he has female workers who are
experts in making handbags and slippers. Elias was thinking of other products that
they could produce out of abaca plants. He asked his workers to give an advice to
him. One of his workers advised him to attend a seminar on how to make lamps,
carpets, accessories, hats, furnitures, clothing and wall coverings. Elias Ma. Sigasig
was so happy with this brilliant idea.

Answer: We usually find abaca plants in Bicol.

The idea of attending a seminar is good especially on the case of Elias
Ma.Sigasig. If Elias will be knowledgeable on other products made of abaca,
he can be able to help Bicol to be more progressive.

Attending a seminar will help you to be knowledgeable on something. A


student like you can attend seminar about how to conduct an interview, how to
make a resume’, how to cook and other skills that you want to know.

In a seminar or symposium, the participants need to participate in a


discussion. They also need to prepare challenging, sensible, thought-provoking
questions to make the discussion more alive. Below are the thought-provoking
questions for better discussions.

THOUGHT-PROVOKING QUESTIONS FOR BETTER DISCUSSIONS

1. Moral/Ethical Dilemmas
Ask questions about moral and ethical concerns.
Example: Is divorce acceptable to our society?Why?

2. Assess-Diagnose-Act
Ask questions through the process of problem-solving.
Examples:
Assessment: What is the issue or problem at hand?
Diagnosis: What is the root cause of this issue or problem?
Action: How can we solve the issue?

3. Compare and Contrast


Ask questions to identify differences and similarities between ideas.
Example: Differentiate climate change and global warming.

4. Interpretive-Evaluative
Ask questions about the intentions or goals of the author, creator,
character etc. then ask questions to evaluate the veracity of these
intentions, and finally the effectiveness of the methods used.

5. Conceptual Changes
Ask questions based on their self-reflection.
Example: Which method is the best?

6. Personal Exploration
Ask questions based on one’s personal idea or exploration.

CLOSED-ENDED AND OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS

Open-ended questions may also use in asking/raising questions in a


seminar or symposium.
Open-ended questions are the ones that require more than one word

Closed-ended question is answerable by “yes” or “no”.

To form questions that will require critical thinking skills, use the open-
ended questions.
