Also known as switchgear.
Free-standing assemblies of switches and
SWITCH BOARD circuit breakers whose function is to provide
switching and feeder protection to the circuits
connected to a main source.

Also known as distribution board,
breaker panel, electric panel.
PANELBOARD It is a box wherein the protective
devices are housed from which the
circuits & bus bars terminate.

Types of Panelboards:
• Lighting Panelboards
• Power/Motor Panelboards
•Distribution Panelboards

Panelboard Location:
• Should be located 1.35M from the floor to it’s
centerline, or 0.75M from the floor to the bottom
of the box.
It must be installed near the load, as in most cases
panelboards are mounted near the kitchen,
service area or garage.
• Can be “flush type” or “surface type”

BRANCH CIRCUIT served by the circuits.
The circuit conductors between the final
over-current device and the outlets (NEC).

Classifications of Branch Circuits:

• General Purpose Branch Circuit

• Appliance Branch Circuit

• Individual Branch Circuit

CIRCUITING GUIDELINES
1. Branch circuits shall be sufficient to
supply a load of 30 watts per square
meter.
Load should not exceed 1,600 watts for
a 20 ampere circuit and 1,200 watts for a
15 ampere circuit.
2. Connect lighting, convenience outlets,
and appliances in separate circuits. The
code requires at least 2 - 20 amp branch
circuits to feed all small appliance
outlets in the kitchen, pantry, dining,
and family room.
3. Convenience receptacles in an area shall
be wires to at least 2 different circuits. Typically on residential projects, Electrical
4. General Purpose – 20 amps Engineers & Electricians only limit:
Lighting fixture – 15 or 20 amps circuit Convenience outlets to 10-12 outlets
and over-current. (Rating: 180VA) per 20-amp branch
circuit.
Lighting outlets to 20 outlets (Rating:
100VA) per 20-amp branch circuit.
