PHILIPPINE NATIONAL STANDARD PNS 1314:1996

Foreword

This Philippine National Standard Marking Requirements for Gold Jewellery Including Gold
Articles was prepared by the Bureau of Product Standards’ Technical Committee on
Jewellery, BPS/TC54.

This standard specifies the marking requirements for gold jewellery including gold articles.
This does not include the composition and the requirements for setting alloys, solders and
filled gold articles as well as the base metal parts of the jewellery.

This standard does not apply to gold articles intended for industrial purposes.

In the preparation of this standard, the Australian Standard Specification for Composition and
Marking Requirements for Gold Articles, AS 2140-1978 was consulted.

1 Scope

This standard specifies the marking requirements of gold jewellery and its solders.

2 Definition

For the purpose of this standard, the following definitions shall apply:

2.1 gold alloy - An alloy that is homogeneous throughout and contains not less than the
amount of pure gold, alloyed with one or more other metals.

2.2 gold articles

2.2.1 Jewellery of pearls and precious and semi-precious stones set on gold, manufactured
from materials imported on consignment basis.

2.2.2 Articles of jewellery and parts thereof, of gold, whether or not plated or clad with
other precious metal.

2.2.3 Articles of goldsmiths or silversmiths wares and parts thereof, of gold, whether or not
plated or clad with other precious metal.

3 Designation of pure gold content

3.1 Method - The pure gold content of gold jewellery shall be designated by three
numerals indicating the number of thousandth parts by mass of pure gold present in every
1000 parts by mass of gold alloy.

3.2 Symbol - The appropriate numerals shall be contained within the boundaries of the
symbol specified in the standard.

4 Symbols

4.1 General - Symbols shall be an exact reproduction, except with regard to size, of the
illustrations specified in figures 1 and 2.

4.2 Gold Symbol - The gold symbol shall be as specified in figure 1.
