Lesson Proper (Concept When we say “Folk Dances in the Philippines”, what
Digest) comes into your mind? (pause) Very good! The Philippines
5 mins has many popular dances which have evolved and changed as
they have been passed down from generation to generation.
Here are some of the most popular dances from the region.
• Pandanggo sa Ilaw is performed while balancing
three oil lamps- one at the head, and one in each hand. It’s a
lively dance that originated on Lubang Island.
• Cariñosa is a folk dance which made for flirting.
Dancers make a number of flirtatious movements as they
hide behind fans or handkerchiefs and peek out at one
another. The essence of the dance is the courtship between
two sweethearts.
• Sinulog is the ritual prayer-dance honoring Senor
Santo Nino of the Child Jesus of the Roman Catholics. It is a
well-known festival dance in Cebu that resembles the current
(Sulog) of what was known as Cebu’s Pahina River.
• Singkil is a traditional dance of the Maranao people
of Lake Lanao depicting one of the episodes in the epic
legend Darangen involving the rescue of princes Gandingan.
It is a popular dance performed during celebrations and other
festive entertainment.
• Tinikling (bamboo dance) is a widely recognized
traditional folk dance and national dance of the Phillipines.
The dance imitates the movement of Tikling birds as they
dodge bamboo traps set by rice farmers.

Lesson Proper Do you love dancing? Great! Do you know the steps of
(concept Digest) some of the folk dances in the Philippines? That’s great!
5 mins Today, we will know deeper about Tinikling folk dance.
The Tinikling (bamboo dance) is a widely recognized
traditional folk dance and national dance of the Philippines.
It’s said that during colonization in 1500s, natives worked too
slowly would be punished by having their feet beaten by
bamboo. Natives would jump to avoid being struck, their
movements seem to imitate the long-legged Tinikling bird
that quickly yet gratefully escapes rice field traps set by
farmers. It’s danced to an ensemble of stringed instruments
which is influenced by Spanish rule. In its simplest form, the
dance involves two people (clappers) hitting, sliding,
clapping 12ft long bamboo poles on the ground and against
each other in synchronization. Simultaneously the dancer/s
step between and over the bamboo. More complex forms of
the dance include 4 or more poles in cross formations and 4
or more clappers and dancers. Both women and men wear
traditional dresses and must be barefoot. It takes practice,
agility, coordination, and rhythm to keep from getting your
ankles caught as the tempo speeds up and bamboo formations
change. For the additional information about the Tinikling
dance, please read attached page in your LAS 2.
Are you still there? Great! Great! Because this time, we
will be going to answer your last activity for today’s lesson.
