The International women's day was celebrated by the Human


Rights Office Kandy on the 06th of March 2012 at Ampitiya
St. Mary's church Parish hall with the theme "Post war
challenges to Women". The programme was organized by the
women's group of
the families of the
disappeared, the
families of the prisoners and the families of the Torture and
Rape survivors and the women's group and widows of the
Ampitiya Parish.

The chief guest of the women's day celebration, Mrs. Nilani


Manthrinayake (attorney-at-law) was received by the women representatives around 10.00 a.m. along with
the guest of honor Rev. Fr. Bonifus Mendis of the National Seminary and
the members of the support group.

The days programme and the significance of the day was explained by Fr.
Nandana Manatunga, the director of the Human Rights office. He said
that the women are being used by the srilankan society as mere objects and they
are fast loosing their inherent dignity and that we need to restore the dignity of
women. He further said that the women of our country that solely bring foreign
revenue through, tea plantations, Garment industry and by foreign employment.
However they are gradually sidelined from the decision making process. The
ever increasing cases of rape and murder make us to believe that our society is mentally ill.
Mrs. Nilani Manthrinayake in her address explained the plight of the
women in the north after 03 years since the official ending of the war. She
said that our culture make things difficult for the widows to survive as there
are so many barriers that have limited the widows and their activities. She
reminded that apart from the chief justice, Attorney general, even the
commissioner of labor is a woman but still the women are being harassed and
raped almost everyday.

The widows, the women's group representatives and mothers of the


survivors presented several cultural items while the women's group of
the parish staged a drama to show the importance of reconciliation
between the 02 communities, especially women, who suffered both
during JVP insurrection and during the civil war.
