Installation Instructions for Universal Lightning

Arrestor
The Universal Lightning Arrestor (ULA) is a dc-passing matrix-type arrestor for use in IDU-ODU co-axial cable
feeds. It is intended for use at building entry, where it can be either bulkhead-mounted on the wall-feed-through
plate, or located just inside the building. Where required by customer practices or for regions of extensive
lightning activity, the ULA can also be installed directly on the ODU N-Type connector for added protection.

A lightning arrestor is installed at building entry to provide protection to the indoor equipment,
including that of other vendors. Where required by the site owner or by local regulations, it must
be installed.
Incorrect equipment and cable grounding and a failure to correctly install lightning arrestors can
invalidate the Aviat Networks warranty.
If circumstances do not permit normal installation practices or do not appear to warrant a normal
installation, the consequences and/or recommended solutions should be confirmed with the Aviat
Networks technical help desk or approved installation companies.
ULA and Installation Kit
Two versions or arrestor are available, N-female to N-
female, and N-male to N-female
The ULAs are bi-directional - they can be installed with
either connector facing the ODU.
The ULA kit includes a ground wire, crimp lug, washer,
nut and O-ring. The ground wire is terminated at one end
for connection to the ULA, and is un-terminated at the
other to enable correct cutting-to-length and the fitting of
the crimp lug.

Bulkhead Installation Procedure: Grounded Copper Feed-through Plate

The ULA ground wire is not required if the ULA is mounted to a properly grounded copper entryway
plate. This plate can either be a feed-through plate forming the entryway itself or it could be a ground
termination strip just inside the shelter entryway.

a) Carefully knock-out or drill a hole in the wall feed-through plate for the ULA N-type bulk head connector.
Where provided, select a knockout with a partial flat section on the circumference of the feed-through hole.
b) Install the ULA using the O-ring, star washer and nut provided. Check that the O-ring is correctly located
within its groove, and flat up against the inside face of the feed-through plate.
c) Trim the IDU/ODU cable to length, fit an N-type male connector, and attach to the ULA.
d) Weatherproof the external N-type connector assembly using the approved weather proofing kit. See
Weatherproofing.
e) Install a jumper cable from the ULA to the indoor radio unit.

Bulkhead Installation Procedure: Non-grounded / Non-master Feed-through

Plate
The ULA ground wire is required if the ULA is mounted to an un-grounded entryway plate or a plate
made from non-conductive material (e.g. aluminum or similar)..
a) Carefully knock-out or drill a hole in the wall feed-through plate for the ULA N-type bulk head connector.
Where provided, select a knockout with a partial flat section on the circumference of the feed-through hole.
b) Install the ULA using the O-ring, ground wire, star washer and nut provided. Check that the O-ring is
correctly located within its groove, and flat up against the inside face of the feed-through plate. Ensure the
ground wire cable is pointing down. Note that the bulk of the body of the ULA should be inside the shelter.
c) Trim the ground wire to length allowing a little slack in the wire when connected to the external ground bar.
Fit the crimp lug supplied to the trimmed end of the ground wire and firmly bolt it to the ground bar.
d) Trim the IDU / ODU cable to length, fit an N-type male connector, and attach to the ULA.
e) Weatherproof the external N-type connector assembly using the approved weather proofing kit. See
Weatherproofing.
f) Install a jumper cable from the ULA to the indoor radio unit.

Building Entry Installation of the ULA

a) Determine where the ULA is to be located. This should be just inside the building, and as close as practical
to the entry point – no more than 1m (3ft) from the entryway. A location must be chosen that ensures that
the body of the ULA will not be in electrical contact with any metal structure (cable tray or similar support
structure). If necessary it should be mounted to the metal support structure using a ceramic or porcelain
insulator

b) Fit the lugged end of the ground wire to the N-type female end of the ULA (end with ‘flats’ on the thread)
and securely fastened using the star washer and nut supplied.
c) Trim the IDU / ODU cable to length, fit an N-type male connector, and attach to the ground-wire end of the
ULA.
d) Trim the ULA ground wire so there is just a little slack in the wire when connected to the master ground bar
or external ground bar. Fit the crimp lug supplied and firmly bolt it to the ground bar. (Where possible
connect it to the external entryway ground bar – surge-related grounds should go directly to the external
ground bar if at all possible).
e) Install a jumper cable from the ULA to the indoor radio unit.

ULA Installation at the ODU

a) Bracket (P/N 086-523261-001) is used to secure the
ULA to the ODU using the Ground Stud. Use the self-
locking nut supplied. The bracket provides rigidity and
strain relief to the ULA when installed on an ODU. This
bracket also eliminates the need for a separate ground
wire for the ULA.
b) A 90 degree N-type adapter connects the ULA to the
ODU.
c) Use the ULA model fitted with an N-type male and N-
type female connector.
d) Install the ODU cable to the ULA. Complete the cable
installation with proper weatherproofing. See
Weatherproofing.
e) Special attention should be made to ensure that the
IDU/ODU cable is supported within 0.6m (2 ft.) of the
ULA. The cable must not be run in a manner that
unduly stresses the mechanical interface of the ULA to
the ODU connector even though the bracket in itself
provides rigidity and strain relief. There should be a
small service loop for the IDU/ODU cable.

Weatherproofing
Connectors exposed to the weather must be weatherproofed.
a) First, apply a layer of vinyl tape to facilitate easy strip-back of weatherproofing when required. Follow
with mastic tape using not less than a 50% overlay. This helps to ensure a weather-tight seal. The
mastic tape must be applied so that it bonds directly onto the primary surface at both ends of the wrap.
b) For bulkhead mounted connectors, the mastic tape must extend at least 50mm (2”) onto the cable
sheath, and be formed / molded up against the feed-through plate. Where the ULA ground wire is fitted,
ensure the mastic provides a weather-tight seal around the ground wire lug and up to at least 50mm (2”)
onto the wire sheath.
c) Finish with a wrap of vinyl tape to provide UV protection for the mastic tape. The vinyl tape must extend
50mm (2”) beyond the end of the mastic tape along the sheath of the cable. Do not stretch the final few
turns to avoid wind-back. Firmly smooth over to ensure a good bond.
Apply copper-based protective grease around the nut/bolt/lug of the ground-bar end of external ground wires.
