Ethernet Smartmotor Troubleshooting v1.1
Ethernet Smartmotor Troubleshooting v1.1
1. Physically connect power, serial communications, and Ethernet to the SmartMotor. Lights
should illuminate on both the PWR/SERVO LED on the SmartMotor as well as the Ethernet
connection.
1. If the PWR/SERVO LED or the status indicator LEDs on the Ethernet adaptor do not
illuminate, this is a failure and the motor is to be sent in for RMA
2. Start the SmartMotor Interface (SMI) and run the Communications Lockup Wizard under the
Communications drop-down menu
a) The lockup wizard will instruct you to first power the motor off. Ensure once power is
disconnected that the LEDs on the motor turn off. Residual capacitance in the motor
may keep the motor powered on for a moment even when power is removed.
b) Once powered off, click Continue.
c) You will be instructed to turn the motor back on. Once LEDs are illuminated again on
the SmartMotor, click Continue again.
d) SMI will then attempt to address the motors. You will be asked if you wish to continue.
Click Yes.
e) SMI should display that communication has been established with the motor
successfully. Close out of the dialog window that pops up.
f) If the communication lockup wizard fails to detect this motor, it is a failure and the
motor is to be sent in for RMA
3. On the left-hand side of the screen under Configuration, a motor will appear under the COM
Port. If it displays (440C), this will be referred to as a “Class 4” SmartMotor. If it displays
(5.0.2.7) this will be referred to as a “Class 5” SmartMotor.
4. Under the Communications drop down menu at the top of the screen, select “Download .SMX
file …” If it is a Class 4 smartmotor (440C) select ETH4.smx, if it is a Class 5 SmartMotor then
select ETH5.smx and click Open.
5. Select “Motor1” from the pop up dialog box and click OK
8. At this point the Ethernet module should be enabled and the SmartMotor user program has
been reset to its factory status.
Determining if the Lantronix has been configured with the web pages and the
correct baud rate.
1) Assign a static IP address to the Ethernet Adapter used to connect to the motor. Assuming the
Adapter is not on a network. The default IP address for the Lantronix is usually 169.254.84.xxx
but it depends how the Lantronix was configured and if a DHCP server is configured on the PC.
We generally use an IP address of 172.16.252.1 for the adapter cards.
2) In SMI detect the motor through the serial port and verify there is a user program that opens
the Comm port so the motor to talk to the Lantronix hardware. Run the program.
a. For class 4 motors:
OCHN(RS4,1,N,19200,1,8,C)
ZS
END
OCHN(RS4,1,N,19200,1,8,C,500)
ZS
END
3) Right click on the Ethernet port in the configuration window and select Detect Network motors
on Ethernet TCP/IP.
4) If you have multiple Ethernet adapters select the adapter the motor is connected to.
5) If the motor was not found try a couple of times then proceed to Downloading the web pages
through the Lantronix DeviceInstaller. If the motor was found with no problems skip to step 10.
If the motor was found and the following message is displayed select change settings of the
motor or computer to communicate with the motor and follow the steps below:
7) Select this computer is not on a network, or the network does not have a server and press Next.
9) Enter an IP address that is on the same subnet and press OK. Our adapter is set to 172.16.252.1,
so we want the motor set to 172.16.252.xxx where xxx is not the same as the PC’s IP address,
10) After the motor is detected, right click on the motor in the configuration window and select
Open Motor’s Web Page. If the motor is not detected try detecting again.
11) If the Lantronix has been programmed correctly the following should be displayed:
5) If the correct adapter is not selected, select Tools->Options from the DeviceInstaller menu,
then select the correct adapter and press OK:
6) Right click on the Adapter displayed and select Refresh. The adapter address may have not
been updated from step 5 yet. This step will update the display to the correct adapter IP
address.
2) Select Use specific installation file (LXI) (previously saved by user) Then press browse and
locate the correct .lxi file.
a. For class 4 motors use sm_installer.lxi.
b. For class 5 motors use CL5_installer_A.lxi.
3) Then press Next.
4) After the download is complete the following screen should be displayed:
2) If the device above does not say unreachable skip to step 7. If the status says unreachable
select the hardware address then press Assign IP :
9) Type 1 then Press Enter. Then type 19200 for the Baudrate and press enter:
10) Continue to press Enter to the following screen is displayed asking for Your choice ?
11) Type 9 and the press Enter. Now the screen should look as follows:
At this point the web pages have been loaded and the baudrate to communicate with the
SmartMotor has been configured. Close the Lantronix software and cycle power on the motor.
Go to step 3 in Determining if the Lantronix has been configured with the web pages and the
correct baud rate.
4) Press assign:
