Andy Bailey
Andy Bailey, also known as Andymation, is an animator and
filmmaker, and while he doesn’t have much critical acclaim, he has an
extremely impressive portfolio behind him. As a child, Bailey made lots of
flipbooks and stop-motion animation, which lead him to study
filmmaking during college. He began working professionally as a stop-
motion animator, and even worked on four LAIKA films, such as
Paranorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Missing Link,
three of which were nominated for an Oscar.
Since then, Bailey has focused on running a YouTube channel and
creating flipbooks for his social media pages but has even done flipbook
work for celebrities and musicians like Keith Urban. His flipbooks don’t
have a style that can be seen across multiple of his flipbooks, but you
could still likely tell that they are his. This also displays his talent and
versatility in being able to create detailed art, whether it be two or three
dimensional.

J.C. Fontanive
J.C. Fontanive is an award-winning artist who has had his work in
dozens of single and group exhibitions and publications such as the BBC,
Vogue Brazil, and even Tech Insider since 2005. Fontanive studied art
and received his BA from Syracuse University, and an MA from The Royal
College of Art, London, and has received awards like the Brooke and
Hap Stein Emerging Artist Prize in 2018 and the Jerwood Painting Prize in
2010. His works vary every year, and has worked with sculpting, mark
making, clay making, flipbooks, and more.
Many of his works are very colorful or completely black and white
with almost no in between, and often combine 2D and 3D elements.
Some of his works look complex and random, and some even look like a
Rube Goldberg machine. In similar fashion, Fontanive’s flipbooks
combine the 2D and animated art of a flipbook with 3D structure
designed to hold the flipbook and create a smoother flipping action.
Most of his flipbooks have to do with flying animals like birds and
butterflies and are extremely colorful.

Stephanie Ognar
Stephanie Ognar was born in Illinois and primarily designed and
created flipbooks throughout the 1990s, but has also worked on other
types of art such as rubbings and paintings. She graduated from the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a BFA in Art Education in
1996, an MFA in Art and Design in 1999, and an MS in Library and
Information Science in 2002. Ognar also spent time in an artist residency
fellowship through the Ucross Foundation and spent a year in the fine art
sculpture program at the Norwich School of Art and Design in Norwich,
England, an award-winning art university.
Ognar’s work has been featured in group exhibitions across the
United States and Europe and has collaborated in several art projects on
the web/digitally as well as physically. Much of her flipbooks have an
interesting process behind them, taking frames from a video she’s
recorded to create the images within the flipbook, and have a unique,
cartoon-ish print style to them.
