FRICTION AFFECTING MOTION

Name: _______________________________ Section: ________________

Learning Objective:
Infer how friction and gravity affect movements of different objects.
(MELC-CODE: S6FE-IIIa-c-1)

Unpacked Competencies:
 Define and identify the kinds of friction.
 Describe how friction affects motion.
 Identify conditions when friction seems to resist motion.
 Compare how objects move in different surfaces.
 Demonstrate ways on how friction affects motion.

Key Concepts

Friction
Try to slide your hand across the top of your desk or table. You feel the
force which moves against the palm of your
hand. That is friction.
Friction is a force between two bodies
which are in contact with each other. Friction is
a contact force that is present in walking,
running, playing, writing, and pushing objects.
Figure 1. sliding hand across the table
Kinds of Friction
 Sliding Friction is the amount of force needed to start an object to
move. It is also called dry friction. The boy needs force to keep the book
moving. This is the force that keeps the floor and the rock in place.
When sliding friction is acting, another force must be present to keep
an object moving. Sliding friction is caused by a chemical bonding
between surfaces.
A book sliding off a desk and brakes slowing down a wheel are
both examples of sliding friction. Sliding friction acts in a direction
opposite the direction of the motion.

 Rolling Friction is the force needed to slow
down a moving or rolling object. As shown
in the picture, once the rock has started
moving, the boy may apply lesser force just
to keep it moving. Rolling friction slows
down the motion of an object rolling along

a surface. /3/26136874/2.5_-_work.pdf

Figure 2. A boy pushing a rock

 Static Friction occurs in motionless objects. It prevents an object from
moving against a surface. It is the force that keeps a book from sliding
off a desk, even when the desk is slightly tilted. It is also the force that
allows you to pick up an object without the object slipping through your
fingers. To move something, you must first overcome the force of static
friction between the object and the surface on which it is resting.

 Fluid Friction is friction that acts on objects that are moving through
a fluid. Fluids include liquids and gases. If you have ever tried to push
your open hand through the water in a tub or
pool, then you have experienced fluid friction.
You can feel the resistance of the water against
your hand. Look at the skydiver in the figure
below. He is falling towards the Earth with a
parachute. Resistance of the air against the
parachute slows his descent. The faster or larger
Figure 3. Skydiving
a moving object is, the greater is the fluid
resisting its motion. That is why there is greater air resistance against
the parachute than the skydiver’s body.
Friction Affecting the Motion of Objects
 Friction opposes motion or movement. It causes the object that moves
along a surface to slow down and eventually stop. Friction acts between
the surfaces in contact. The direction of friction is always against the
direction of the applied force.
 It is difficult to stop or start moving when little friction is around. Too
much friction may also be a problem. For example, it is difficult to move
a heavy box on a cemented floor than on a tiled floor because the surface
of the cemented floor is rough while the tiled floor is smooth.
 Sometimes friction needs to be increased. At times we need to decrease
it. The surface of the table tennis racket is usually padded with rubber
so that the tennis balls will not slip when they hit the pad. While some
handles of tennis rackets are wrapped with cloth to give a better hold
on the racket. This way the racket will not fly off when the player swings
it. So, it is simple. To increase friction, you must make the surface
rough.

How Objects Move in Different Surfaces
While riding a car, you notice that it travels fast on a cemented road
and then slows down when it passes a bumpy road. There
is more friction between the car’s wheels and a bumpy
cemented road. Friction slows down the car’s motion.
When the car is nearing the road intersection, the driver
steps on the brakes. The motion of the car slows down
and then comes to a stop. Stepping on the brakes
increases the friction between the brakes and the wheels, Figure 4. Car tires
as a result, the wheels turn slower. As the vehicle
continues moving with the wheels turning slower, the friction between the
wheels and the road increases, so the car stops. The rougher is the surface,
the stronger is the friction, hence the motion of an object is slow.
Friction is a force between two different
surfaces that slide against each other. It is
the force acting against you which means it
is hard for you to stop sliding across a shiny
wooden floor while wearing socks. The
amount of friction between your feet and the
floor surface determines how well you can
Figure 5. feet sliding on a shiny wooden floor slide. The combination of surfaces, such as
socks on a shiny wooden floor, produce very
little friction. The smoother the surface is, the lesser friction there will be.
