IV. PROCEDURES
1. Springboard/ Motivation The learners will have 30 minutes in answering the PRE-TEST in SMART ALS Edmodo.

2. Activity Look at the objects below and answer the following questions:

3. Analysis Discussions:
 A set is a collection of objects, things, or symbols which are clearly defined. In the objects above, the sets are:
1. Set of gadgets 2. Set of school supplies 3. Set of clothes
The groups are called sets for as long as the objects in the group share a characteristics and are thus well-defined. We have three well-defined
sets in the objects above.
 A well-defined set clearly indicates what a member of the set is and what is not.
Examples:
A = {primary colors}
B = {beautiful girls in school}
C = {months in a year}
D = {excellent singers}
E = {popular actors}
 The individual objects in a set are called the members or elements of the set.
Examples:
1. A = {school days in a week}
A = {monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday}
Monday ∈ A
The symbol “∈” is used to indicate that an object is an element or member of the set.
2. B = {primary colors}
B = {yellow, blue, red}
Yellow, red, blue are members or elements of a given set
 The empty set and null set are set with no members or elements. It is denoted by the symbol {} for empty set and Ø for null set.
Examples:
1. A = { triangles with 4 sides}
2. B = { months in a year that starts with B}
3. C = {whole numbers less than 0}
 The cardinality of set is the number of elements contained I that set.
Examples:
In the objects given earlier , the cardinality of set of gadget is 3 and the cardinality of the set of clothes is 4.
The “cardinality of set A” is written as n(A)
 A = {primary colors}
A = {yellow, red, blue}
n(A) = 3
B = {days in a week}
B = {mon, tue, wed, thurs, fri, sat, sun}
n(B) = 7

4. Abstraction Let’s Remember:

 A set is a well-defined group of objects, called elements that share a common characteristics.
 Elements are objects or things in a set.
 Braces {} are used to group the elements of a set.
 You denote sets using capital letters and lowercase letters will be used to refer to any element of a set.
 The null set is an empty set. The null set is a subset of any set.
 The cardinality of a set is the number of elements contained in a set.

5. Application Activity 1
Determine whether the given set is well-defined, not well-defined, or null set. If well-defined, give the elements and its cardinality.
