The Kartilya was the moral and intellectual foundation
used to guide the actions of Katipuneros. Upon joining the
Katipunan, members were required to read the Kartilya and
must bind to its code of conduct. Changing the way people
thought and acted was important to the early Katipuñeros;
they understand that was the only way to truly change the
Philippines for the better. Play-acting as and implicitly
referencing the Katipunan without fully understanding their
political and moral context and goals essentially degrades the
breadth of what they were trying to achieve.
2. Why can the Kartilya be considered timeless and relevant to
the industrializing and globalizing present?
The Kartilya was written by Emilio Jacinto to serve as the
guide of the actions of the Katipuneros. It is considered
timeless and relevant in the industrializing and globalizing
present due to the unique substance of each paragraph that it
tackles different aspects of a person’s life. The book contains
moral and enlightening lessons for a person to live a purpose-
driven life.
3. As a student, how will you embody the main teachings and
guiding principles of the Kartilya? Concretize your answer and

Upon reading the Kartilya, I, as a student, have
realizations about myself, how I live my life, and the way I
handle others. The most essential lesson I have read from the
Kartilya that created a great impact to myself is the line that
says; “Don’t fritter away time; lost riches may be recovered,
but time lost will never come again.” As a student, I do have a
lot of school works especially during this online learning

enlightened with the importance of time management
because time lost will never come. Staying at home while
attending classes would require great time management.
