are inaccessible to normal compacting equipment shall
be compacted with the help of Contractor's mechanical
tampers of approved type in layers not exceeding 100
mm. Notes: - (a) Quantity payable shall be same as in
item no 1,& 3. (b) The minimum number of passes of the
roller shall be 8 or more depending upon field trials (as
per IS: 10379- 1982) main criterion being to compact
upto a dry density equal to or more than 98% of the
maximum dry density of the fill material & 100% of MDD
in case of blanketing material referred to in the
description of the item. (c) Each layer shall be continued
to be rolled till the required dry density is achieved
uniformly throughout the layer. (d) Rollers shall not be
allowed near to any concrete surface closer than 1500 m
. And the entire fill in this space shall be mechanically
tamped. Final rolling of the top most layers shall be done
with a smooth wheel tyre roller. (e) Filling behind minor

both sides. (f) In back filling over structures, material
shall be deposited in layers of 100 mm. thickness,
sloping away from the structure with each layer carefully
tamped. ( g ) Where the moisture content of the earth in
any layer is above optimum moisture content, the same
shall be left for drying for suitable period to bring down
the moisture content very near to optimum moisture
content before rolling is commenced. If the soil is dry,
water shall be sprinkled over the spread layer, as
convenient in order to attain moisture content near to
optimum moisture content before rolling is commenced.
( h ) Each layer shall be compacted to the desired
density over it's entire width before commencing the
compaction of next layer. (i) While compacting, it shall be
ensured that there is a minimum overlap of 200 mm. (8")
between successive runs of the roller. (j) The dry density
of each layer of compacted soil shall be ascertained by
taking soil samples collected from either side of the
center line across the track with a few taken at random
near the edges as per IS;2720(Pt.XXVIII and XXIX)-
1974, 1975 respectively. a minimum of three samples
shall be taken between any two chainages. (k) No
