CIE 2255: Water Resources Engineering

Tutorial I
1. Plot the 5 - year moving averages curve for a place having annual rainfall records as given in
the table below. Also, plot the annual rainfall depths as a bar chart on the same axes.

2. The ordinates of the rainfall depths obtained from the chart of a recording raingauge are given
below. Draw its (i) Mass Curve; (ii) Hyetograph. Also, state the values of total depth of
rainfall, its duration, and average intensity. Express intensities in mm/h.

3. The ordinates of the rainfall depths obtained from the chart of a recording rain gauge are given
below. Find the ordinates of rainfall hyetograph. Obtain the values of total depth of rainfall
and average rainfall intensity. Express intensities in mm/h.

4. In a storm of 210 minutes duration, the incremental rainfall at various time intervals is given below. (i)
Obtain the ordinates of the hyetograph and represent the hyetograph.
(ii) Obtain the ordinates of the mass curve of rainfall for this storm and plot the same. What is the
average intensity of storm over the duration of the storm?

5. Compute the mean precipitation over the basins using arithmetic mean and Theissen polygon
method.

7. For the data given below, prepare 3 year moving average curve. Find out the 10 year mean
precipitation and list the years having precipitation less than the mean. Also, plot the 3 year
moving average curve on a bar chart of annual rainfall depths

Year 1950 1951 1952 1953 1954 1955 1956 1957 1958 1959 1960

8. A catchment has 6 rain gauge stations. In an year, the annual rainfall recorded by the gauges are as
follows:

Station A B C D E F

Rainfall (cm) 82.6 102.9 180.3 110.3 98.8 136.7

For a 10 % error in the estimation of the mean rainfall, calculate the optimum number of stations in the
catchment
9. The normal annual rainfall at stations A, B, C and D in a basin are 80.97, 67.59. 76.28 and
92.01 cm respectively. In the year 1975, the station D was inoperative and the stations A, B
and C recorded annual precipitations of 91.11, 72.23 and 79.89 cm respectively. Estimate the
rainfall at station D in that year
