Introduction:

Priority of every chemist in the laboratory must be

safety. So awareness and management of potential
danger or harm is a primary concern.

To minimize or eliminate hazard in the laboratory,

Care of individual is the most important aspect of
safety.

Knowing the safety guidelines before doing

anything or entering the lab is very important and
critical.
Self Protections (Care of Individual):

1. Clothing: Lab coat or apron, cover shoes and other protective

clothing should be put on.
2. Wearing safety goggles always
3. Chemical safety should be follow strictly ( chemical spilling and
tasting, add water to acid, direct smelling and so on.
4. Horseplay and other relative attitude should be avoided (Safe
behavior).
5. Never eat or drink in the lab.
6. Avoid jewelry, long hair, moisturizers and other cosmetics
7. Heating procedures should be strictly followed.
8. Maintaining clean environments during and after experiments
9. Wash your hands after leaving the lab
PERSONAL SAFETY

7
While Working in the Lab:

 Closed toed shoes

 Restrain long hair,
loose clothing (Thobe,
Goutrah).
 Long pants that covers
the top of your shoes
(no visible skin)
 Use appropriate eye,
skin, and hand
protection
8
While Working in the Lab

 Lab coats and other

protective clothing
should be worn

9
While Working in the Lab

 Do not engage in
horseplay, pranks or
other acts of mischief
in a chemistry lab
 Never eat or drink in
the lab.
 Support all beakers
10 and flasks with clamps.
While Working in the Lab

 Report all:
Accidents
Injuries
Fires
Spills
11
Eye protection or Safety Glasses

Protects against risk of

 flying objects or dust particles
 splashes of hazardous
materials
 harmful rays

 Work with significant risk of splash

of chemicals or projectiles
 Can be worn over prescription
12 glasses
PERSONAL SAFETY
Eye protection

 Working in the lab would necessitate

regular safety glasses or chemical
13 safety goggles
Face Shield

 Work with significant

risk of splash on face
or possible explosion
 Face shield protects
face adequately but
not eyes

14
Hand Protection

Requires selection of the appropriate

chemical resistant gloves
Gloves are required to
 cuts
protect your hands
 punctures against:
 snags
 chemical burns
 thermal burns and
 temperature
15 extremes
Summary

 Wear protective goggles and lab

coat whenever heating or pouring
hazardous chemicals
 Do not undertake any work
unless the appropriate safety
precautions are adopted

Self Protections (Leaflet-Summary)
Laboratory Safety Equipments

It is very important to know the location and

operations of safety equipment in the lab

Eye wash station

Fire extinguisher

Fume hoods

Safety shower

First aids kits, and

Emergency exit
While Working in the Lab:

 Handle volatiles in a chemical

fume hood

19
LABORATORY SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Safety Showers

 Safety showers are used to extinguish fire, wash off

hazardous substances from the skin of personnel.

20
LABORATORY SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Eye Wash Stations

 Eye wash station are used to flush the eyes if

hazardous substances are splashed into them

21
LABORATORY SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Fire Extinguishers

 Fire extinguishers are used to

extinguish or control small-scale fire

LABORATORY SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Fireproof Blankets

 Fireproof blankets are used to wrap a burning

victim or to control small-scale fire in the lab

Case Study
Science experiment goes wrong in
a school classroom

'I was on fire': Four students burned when science teacher's

experiment goes horribly wrong
•Dane Neuberger, 15, suffered second-degree burns
•Students screamed during chaos at Minnesota school
•It happened when flame did not stay in methanol bottle

Horrific: Dane Neuberger, of Maple Grove, Minnesota, was the most

24 seriously injured of four students who were hurt by the accident.
Accidents Managements in the Lab
Care of individual (Safety is all about common sense): Prompt
action to help yourself and colleagues.

Report all accidents or injuries to the instructor

Locate safety equipments
In case of chemical contact with your skin, flush affected area with
water, then follow with washing with soap and water ( not same way in
case of your face)
Abrasion or cut: wash affected area with water and other treatment
should be followed according to your instructor advise.
Chemical spill over large part of your body (use safety shower to flood
affected area and follow your instructor’s advise)
Chemical spill on work station or in the labmanagement procdeures
 Alert your neighbors
Clean the spill appropriately (volatile, flammable or toxic) as directed by
instructor
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

 In the event of fire or other emergency, the

following procedures apply:

 When you have fire on your clothes or body

– You should immediately either drop to the floor and role or
go to the emergency shower.
– Once the fire is extinguished, chill any burns with cool water
and seek medical attention.
 In case of a small-scale fire, use Fire Extinguisher or
26 Fire blanket to extinguish or control it.
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

In the event of a big fire/blaze in the lab,

– Shout “Fire” to alert others and evacuate the
room through the nearest safe exit ASAP.
– Call the instructor of the lab and 999
(Emergency), 4444 (Security), 3333 (Medical
center).
– When Fire alarm is triggered, proceed quickly
to the nearest exit but don’t panic
– Do not return to the building until the "All

27 Clear" is given by the Security Manager.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
Chemical spills

 Establish what material has been spilled and

what personal protective measures should be
followed. This information can be obtained
from a MSDS from the Chem Alert Database.
 Acids or Alkalis - first neutralize then absorb
with paper towel, cloth or mop
 Mercury - cover with sulfur then remove with
dustpan and placed it in a sealed container

Waste Disposal Managements

Forms of waste generated in the lab

Solid waste: Salts, broken glass,

tissues, pen, plastics Cans etc

Liquid waste: Organic and

inorganic including non toxic, toxic
and flammable liquids.

Gaseous waste: This can include

by product of reactions and gases
(N2, He, Ar, CO2, acetylene etc) use
for reactions in the lab
